I don't recommend sleepovers with a crowd of girls. We did this for DD 10th party and the 6 of them were so wound up and some were crying they were tired but couldn't sleep etc. I had to ring one girl's parent to collect her after she was sick - this was a problem as parents separated and both had been out for the night and over the limit. I couldn't take her home as OH was working and I couldn't leave the other girls alone and I didn't want a sick child on my hands.

For her 11th I told her we would all be too jet lagged having just come back from Florida 2 days earlier for a sleepover. They didn't seem to mind.

We had a party for my daughter recently - we didn't have a sleepover as I thought it was too near Christmas - but she did have 6 friends over and we designed t'shirts (cheap white t'shirts from Tesco and fabric paints) - we then made shrinky dinks which occupied them for ages.

I then made a small buffet with dips etc and by that time it was time for them to be picked up.

For party bags I got cheap make up bags and filled them with bargins I found over the weeks like gell pens lip gloss etc.
  • do you have to invite 6. My daughters 11th we took her and 3 others for an hour's horse riding then home for some normal type tea. They all loved it, I think it was about £30.

guess for the food nibbles like sandwiches, dips crisps sausage rolls would be the best way to go
  • one year old children are probably too young for organized games. Maybe you could just have some music and take some toys, such as balls, sit on ride toys like they do at toddler clubs. I agree with the nibbles for food.

Go for EASY food. Then you won't mind if they don't eat it.

For this reason, sandwiches are OUT in my book. Fiddly to make and won't be eaten. Pizza cut into finger portions is good, cocktail sausages and sausage rolls. Dips with cut up veg are good and don't take as long as sandwiches, plus the kids (and their mums) can see what they are getting: a child can have carrot sticks without dips if they don't like the dip, but once you've put mayonnaise into a sandwich you can't take it out ...

My ds 2nd birthday is coming up soon and I will probably do a few sandwiches but not many - most kids aren't really interested in sandwiches at parties so don't worry about healthy food too much - it won't hurt for one meal... ;)

I will do pizza fingers as well probably a few chicken nuggets as well. Some chunks of cheese cos my dd 3.5yo loves them anyway.

For 1yo how about some chopped up fruit too - like bananas/grapes/satsuma segments. Breadsticks - can get different flavoured ones? Soft crisp type things like wotsits or quavers.

Ooo how about a dvd night with some suitable chick flicks? Could have some homemade non-alcoholic punch or bucks fizz too add to the grown up theme. Make overs or manicures could go down well too.
