For a quiet one, try the chocolate game. You need a chocolate bar unwrapped, a knife and fork, gloves, scarf, hat and sunglasses, and a dice. Children sit in a circle and take turns to throw the dice, one go each. If a child throws a 6, he puts on the hat, scarf, gloves and glasses, and then tries to get a piece of chocolate using the knife and fork (no hands allowed to unwrap the choc, must always be holding the knife and fork). As the child is doing this the dice is continuing on its rounds, and if another child throws a 6, then child 1's time for attacking the chocolate is finished, and child 2 gets their turn. This one can go on for ages.

Another one is "mummies" where an adult volunteers to be wrapped up by all the children in several rolls of toilet paper. Very wasteful and not at all environmentally friendly but hysterical!

I also tend to use toys which my children already own to set up team games - eg skittles, darts, table football. Split the children into two teams (we do it by drawing lots so no child gets upset at being the last to be chosen), then move from activity to activity, with each child's individual score being added to their teams running total. We always intend to give all the children on the winning team a small price (Mini choc bar or something) but every time we have done this, the children and we have forgotten about this, as they are more interested in the team aspect and the games than who actually wins.
  • I think this would be good in the families board as there have been a few threads on children's parties in there. I'll move it over for you so you can get more responses.

AS long as they don't decode to all "PILE" on you when your curled in the corner it'll all be ok

  • When I used to do kids parties, I lovely easy game was Corners. You simply give each of the four corners of the hall a name - pop groups, football teams, whatever the birthday child is into. Put a large sheet of paper on the floor in each corner with the name of the corner on it. The kids all dance around to music and then when it stops, they run to one of the corners. You then randomly pick one of the corners (I used to pick a card out) and anyone in that corner is out.

Was great fun and easy to play. Have the first go as a test! and make sure that when you are down to the last few, you cannot have more than one on each corner!

    Have a lovely party!

Balloon burst always works well at childrens parties we do.

Blow up a balloon for each child and attach an elastic band to it. Get them to put the rubber band round their right ankle. When the music starts they have to stamp on everyone elses balloon and burst them, while protecting their own. Once their balloon has burst they are out and have to sit down. The winner is the last one with a balloon left.

Really good fun and children love it, but it's very manic! We run a mobile disco and always play the Benny Hill theme tune while they play this game, and that works well too!

We're playing a game at my 9 year old sons party tomorrow, use an empty cereal box, the bigger the better. Each child takes a turn to pick up the box (from the floor) with their teeth (arms behind their back), after all the children have had a turn, cut an inch off the top of the box and they do it again, if they fall over then they are out. Keep cutting the height of the box until you are down to the last child who wins a prize.

Apparently i was the coolest mum for parties when i got volounteers to put an old tshirt on and first apple bob and then when they had apple bobbed and were all wet faced had to then bob for marshmallows in a tray of flour. The boys absoloutly loved it and it was the top game at my party(i had loads of games). Hope you have a fun day!

    WOW !!!!

these games are bringing back happy fun memories from when I was a child.

Thank you so much, Ive talked through some of the games with my DD, and she's happy to have some of the above mentioned. Would love to play them all, but doubt we will have enough time.

Im sure now I wont be slumped in the corner with a bottle of vodka. Shame though - sounds ideal! Do you think the kids will tell the difference between normal & vodka jelly? lol (gosh I wouldn't dare)

Thanks guys, keep the suggestions coming in -

We did a relay race (teams of 4 - 24 kids in total av age 5/6) with party blowers and balloons down the hall and round a bean bag and back to start - any touching of the balloon and they had to go back to the start - needless to say the boys were the biggest cheaters!

That game is really funny at adult parties once they have had plenty to drink :D
