  • There is a new website for tutors called tutorhub.org you might want to visit.

Its a website where tutors and wannabe tutors can post and answer each others questions for unbiased advice on things like marketing etc. Its not commercial - no charge for using it.

    Worth a visit.
  • Thanks jonellis! Unfortunately as I am moving to France in February my girls need to find someone new :-( I am going to give them a few websites to look on and that will be a help.
  • Hi, I used FirstTutors and got 4 students emailing me classes in about 2 to 3 months. Something which can help you, if you need the income. All of them wrote that they want several lessons (30 or so). Not bad if all the classes are taken.

However, there were problems as first tutors requires us to communicate through their site. Most of them did not log in a second time and so the tutoring did not go ahead. Sometimes, I would get a reply on the last day, and before i respond, the website has closed that thread.

    Good website though:
    www.firsttutors.co.uk

It also has languages, subjects, business etc. Worth registering.

What sort of work? Does she expect to tutor English, or Brazilian?

There's quite a lot online these days too, companies hiring online tutors: http://hubpages.com/hub/Online-Teaching-Opportunities-List-of-Tutoring-and-Mentoring-Jobs - they all require different levels of qualification etc as they're in different countries, or even enabling people to teach their own classes online.
  • Some very interesting stuff on here. Thanks to all.

I am a qualified chiropractor working part-time but would like to supplement my income by doing some possible maths tutoring. As well as a masters in chiropractic, I also have a BSc in Pure and Applied maths from Exeter in 1997 (what I can remember of it!).

I considered becoming a Maths teacher before training as a chiropractor so wonder whether I would be suitable as a private tutor. I have never taught before (other than helping my friends out with the biomechanics module of chiropractic). I deal with the public as a chiropractor so that is not a problem but my last CRB check was about 5 years ago (not that I have done anything since!)

Would I realistically be able to tutor given my qualification is over 10 years old and with no PGCE experience?

    Thanks for any help

    Hi
Unfortunately without any formal teaching qualificaion you will struggle to get work. Most parents want qualified teachers who know and understand the curriculum. Maybe you could try tutoring Law? I'm sure there are many stuggling law students who might benefit from your knowledge, you will need a CRB cert.
    Good luck

 Do you think I would stand any chance? I've taught English abroad to children (and not-so-little 'uns) between the ages of 6-20 in settings from schools, after-school clubs and universities. Surely I should be able to get some tutoring work in my main foreign language (French), in which I have a B.A. and M.A. from a reputable university?

I think the French route would be a good idea. You can try tutoring sites etc, your experience would count for something. Good luck.
