Thanks Riviera Kid!
From what I understood of it, a private individual can't get one, no? Don't you have to have it done as part of an organisation. (I must have misunderstood something on the thread!)
Yes, you're right. See if there's any tutoring agencies near you and ask to be on their books (this is how I got my CRB). You'll probably have to pay some sort of commission to the agency but it will get you started.*removed by forumteam - please do not advertise in signatures*0 -
Hi, i was just wondering
I have read through all this and I was thinking if I could tutor.
I am not a qualified teacher and at the moment I am at uni doing my psychology degree. I have my a levels and would like to tutor maths up to GCSE. I have a CRB with a school as well.
Obviously I couldnt charge as much as someone who is a teacher but could I tutor?Sealed pot challenge 18750 -

Yes you could tutor, but you would need to do some research on past exam papers.
You would be competing against qualified teachers, some with many years of experience. They will know the curriculum off by heart and will have copies of years of past papers. They will know what questions come up again and again, and although they won't tutor to the test they will provide valuable hints and advice depending on the exam board the student is taking the test with.0 -
Hi All,
Need a bit of advice if possible I just wrote this all out and failed to post so I am typing it quickly again! Apologising in advance for any errors.
My Qualifications: BA English; completed GTP in Secondary English last year and now have Qualified Teacher Status. Currently working as a Secondary English Teacher.
I am struggling with teaching at the moment, mainly because of behaviour. I absolutely love working with pupils 1:1, planning creative lessons and marking. I have registered with a tutoring agency but am reluctant to register with others because of references (will the school mind if I put them as a referee?). I also saw a one-one tutor job at a local school, 2 hours a day, 2 days a week for £25.00 an hour. I would love to start tutoring but I am already doing 8-6pm at school each day so would not be able to fit it in. I have started to think about working as a part time teacher or even a TA after my NQT year and then looking seriously at tutoring to get the rest of my income. Would taking my CELTA course help as this is something that interests me?
I suppose what I am asking is after my NQT year, would it be possible to work part time and spend the rest of my time tutoring and not take a drop in income (currently picking up £1200 as a qualified teacher and have a mortgage to pay). I previously worked as a civil servant so would consider returing to that if I could do some tutoring on the side.
I am finding that teaching is just causing me too much stress and unhapiness but an office job as a civil servant did not offer me enough of a challenge. I just want a balance of the 2!September Ten Pound a day challenge: £10 a day/£300 a month

Jen,
Have you looked into one-to-one tuition at schools?

Hi Simon
thanks for your reply. It would be fab to have some advice from you as your posts show you're v experienced. I registered with one to one in the summer. A colleague told me it was done in the daytime and was only suitable for retired teachers so I left it.My council emailed me some schools to write to and I have seen the job I mentioned in my previous post. Only problem is I can not apply for it whilst still in my current job as it takes place after school but I can't quit my current job on the basis of one tutoring job! Can I ask how you went about starting your tutoring? I have joined some agencies and emailed some local tution centres but don't see how I can make this a full time thing?September Ten Pound a day challenge: £10 a day/£300 a month

as a teacher myself I would say that you need to be extremely careful if you take on tutoring. There have been cases where people have sued when their child has failed to pass the test they have been tutored for.
It is EXTREMELY unwise to work with children without a CRB check. We tutor at school, on the premises, teachers only tutor, not teaching assistants and we all tutor sat in the same room. Being alone with a child leaves you open to all sorts of allegations.
Also it might be worth checking if you need to be registered with an organisation like the GTC which regulates teaching or some sort of other professional body if you are not a teacher.Current mortgage 133k
