I think the French route would be a good idea. You can try tutoring sites etc, your experience would count for something. Good luck.

Thanks. Tutoring is soemthing I was considering in the new year and I was a bit distressed to think that all that time teaching might count for nothing. Phew!

  • I wouldn't worry about the lack of a formal teaching qualification. It certainly hasn't held me back. Over 40 students in total - currently got 18 on the go - busier than ever!

I would strongly advise getting a CRB check done though.

    Thanks Riviera Kid!

From what I understood of it, a private individual can't get one, no? Don't you have to have it done as part of an organisation. (I must have misunderstood something on the thread!)

You can apply yourself through Disclosure Scotland who will issue you with a basic certificate. Only to get an enhanced check (showing non-spent convictions) do you need to have a charity or organistation apply on your behalf.

But for what you are planning, a basic certificate from Disclosure Scotland will be sufficient.

I live in England. Would that also apply to me?

  • Even if you live in England, you can use Disclosure Scotland. Many companies do when asking prospective employees for CRB checks as its easier than using the English counterpart.

The certificate will cover you all over the UK (including Northern Ireland)

good thread...i woudln't mind doing this, although i imagine brushing up on a sylabus before teaching would be time consuming,
  • I'm a university student in Leeds, where would I start? My degree is English Lit, I studied Theatre, Psychology and English at A Level and got very good GCSES so could I offer general tution or just my degree subject. Can I even be a tutor if I'm still at uni.

If anyone has any advice they would like to PM me feel free

  • Based on the recent initiatives to get more people into teacher training, there must be a high demand for tutors at the moment. Try contacting all the schools in your area telling them your qualifications and your tuition service, and its worth setting up a simple website to advertise your skills too

When I get back to uni in Jan I'm going to send a letter to all the schools. However I've never been engaged in paid tuition so I don't know what to charge and whether I can just start without any qualifications other than my school and the degree I am currently studying.
