  • In addition to the CRB check I think we are going to have to register with the ISA (Independent Safeguarding Authority). I definitely don't fancy a £5000 fine!

  • OOOO am feeling brave. Just phoned the local highschool to see if they'd recommend their students to me. Never done this before but it's about time I got round to it. Is the ISA obligatory? I thought it was a voluntary thing that might help reassure?
  • I'm not clear on the ISA's either but thankfully both of my students are 18 so it won't matter! It is supposed to be starting next month, but I think there should be a grace period for people to get used to it. When new legislation comes into effect, the government ought to have a responsibility to inform those concerned themselves and ensure compliance, but how are they going to find out everyone who has contact with children? They won't, and they will expect everyone to whom it applies to have heard about it on the news, read about on the internet, and signed themselves up of their own accord.
  • Is anyone else doing a bit of a juggling act at the moment as parents are demanding certain days and times? I got some new students over the summer and as school's started I've had kids return that I was tutoring last academic year. 6pm on a Monday seems to be particularly popular!

OMG my full-time job/tutoring/housework/kids/hubby and exercise is all down to a finely tuned regime. Then someone wants to change days/times and/or expects me to drop everything for a long call about spelling or a specific 11+ type. I love my tutoring but sometimes wish I could have a week off!!!!!
  • How many students do you have at the moment Annie? I've currently got 12.

  • Wow 12, you do well! I have two who have 2 hours a week each, in the evening. I wish one of them would go to a 2-hour chunk, but I'm not sure if her attention span would hold up!

  • Hey folks:

Sorry to hijack this thread but I've been thinking about becomming a tutor to top up my income a little, I don't have my PGCE and not likely to be going for it any time soon.

I graduated Law from Queens University Belfast and am currently studying towards becoming a solicitor (halfway through study), but I've been involved with youth leading for about 5 and 1/2 years now so I have a good bit of experience working with children of all ages (from 5-18 in various capacities).

Is there much point in me trying to continue becomming a tutor or should I look into another supplimentary type of income?

    Hi
Unfortunately without any formal teaching qualificaion you will struggle to get work. Most parents want qualified teachers who know and understand the curriculum. Maybe you could try tutoring Law? I'm sure there are many stuggling law students who might benefit from your knowledge, you will need a CRB cert.
    Good luck
