Here's a good resource on how to be a private tutor. There's a hell of a lot of good info there, especially if you're new to it.
What does anyone else think??
... I tried to post the link but it wouldn't let me, so just type:
tutor pages tutoring e-book
into google.
That does look like a cracking resource. I've just read the first few pages and it looks fantastic.*removed by forumteam - please do not advertise in signatures*0 -

As for me, I'm a 21 year old law student, but have been closely involved in education since 18 as a school governor and have a real passion for teaching. I also have an up to date CRB. My A Levels and GCSEs are excellent, with As / A*s across the board. Based on that, what should I charge???
I'd check out what other tutors in your area are charging. But I reckon £20 an hour is probably reasonable.*removed by forumteam - please do not advertise in signatures*0 -
A little advice needed here if possible. I tutor many children every week for general primary maths and english, 11/12+, MATHS gcse, adult learning and SEN. I spend a lot of time and effort creating work for these students. I have created some 12+ papers based on old 11+ papers(the 12+ is similar to the 11+ but has more questions, less time allocated and a slightly different layout of the questions) The child I created them for successfully passed his 12+ exam and will be starting his chosen Grammar school in September (Yay!) I have been asked via a forum if I could pass on the papers which I did once free of charge, now it seems many others want them and I am reluctant to keep letting them go for free when they took me hours to make. (I am too on a DFW quest, hence the extra tutoring)
Should I feel bad about charging for them?0 -
I wouldn't feel bad charging for them. But I wouldn't like to say how much to charge. I've been using a lot of stuff from the TES and emaths websites recently - all of it for free. You may need to upload a sample question or two somewhere so that people can see what they're getting.*removed by forumteam - please do not advertise in signatures*0

Hi,
i'm a qualified History teacher and thinking of doing some tutoring next year.
i have been reading the threads but still have a few questions if anyone can help please?
many of you talk about tutoring core subjects, do you know if there is much call for History tutors?
Also i used to teach in one of the schools in the local area so am aware of the examining boards they use and their syllabus. but living in a city there are many schools in the area. Was going to put an advert up in some local newsagents - wondering how i tackle the pupils syllabus? do i advertise the topics i can cover? I don't think it is very fair on the pupil for me to tuto a topic i have no experience in (e.g Indian partition) or give exam practice advice on an examining board i have no experience of? how do fellow tutors feel about this and how do you deal with it?
Many thanks0 -
I teach over a variety of different topics and modules. I haven't heard of much call for a History tutor but how about primary subjects such as maths or English? Your basic standard must mean you can tutor this age range in those subjects??First baby due 3/3/14 - Team Yellow! Our little girl born 25/2/140

Here's another good resource for tutors. It focuses on the mechanics of a good tuition session and looks at examples in English and Maths but I'm sure it's applicable to every subject.

I too am on First Tutors, I think it's brilliant how once you have paid the introduction fee, the rest of the money is your own! They also give a 10% reduction if you pay within a week- which on my £5 fee, wwas good amount off.
I'm a French graduate and just a few days after registering with FT, I received two requests on the same day. I was really surprised that it happened so soon, I wasn't even expecting any responses and especially not so quickly! I have been an English Assistant in France and an English teacher on summer camps for Belgian teenagers so I have a lot of experience in teaching young people. I am only charging £10 an hour because I am new and don't have very much prepared yet- some of the people on there have been teachers for years with tons of resources, and I didn't feel I matched up to that. However, I now wish I had put more because there is noone near me offering French. I also seem to have cornered the market in "young cool tutor" terms- my two students are doing A Levels and like having a young tutor who they have things in common with. I had my first session with one of them yesterday and another tomorrow, and meeting my second girl on Sunday so wish me luck!
Thank you for the links people have been putting up, every little helps :-)0
