I was at an event yesterday and was speaking to the VM CEO. I knew there was something important I should have asked but was too busy getting her to sign my copy of her book and forgot! :rotfl:

One wee question - can I open an Issue 9 or 10 when it comes out online operated account AND a branch or "store" as they say operated account of the same issue?

Also would I have to pay in at the branch for that or can I set up a standing order once opened? As I work across the road from a branch it wouldn't be a major hassle.

Yes. I pay in my £250 in cash at the store on opening the account and then create a SO for the 1st of the following month until further notice. Hassle free, particularly for you! :)

I collect proceeds in cash so that I can get it into my bank account immediately, Virgin and my bank being 200 yards apart, though other ways are as quick.

I've been weighing up whether to ditch Santander recently, I've worked out on a spreadsheet that after the 1.5% current account interest + cashback, - the £60 annual fees, the actual rate of return is about 1.3% for me

So this change the regular saver is making me ponder whether to just close the account (without penalty according to the email?) and move to somewhere like Nationwide.

Will need to consider where to put the balance though, will probably look for a fixed rate

"Hassle free" - isn`t what I would describe opening a Virgin RS instore. You have to make an appointment, spend half an hour going into town, and then listen to financial stuff "ad nauseam" for half an hour. Instead I had a lovely hour and a half gardening today. The online Regular Saver is different. I am a fan (no not Man Utd!) even at 2.25% because they are quick and "hassle free" to set up and get in 14 months £250 payments and you can set a new one up every 2 months. The "Hysteria" regarding the release of the Virgin RS 10 reminds me of the day "The Troggs" came to my Home town :rotfl:

1882 works across the way which makes it less hassle than probably anybody else on here :)

And there are ways of deterring them from the spiel you now know by heart.

I can't see how changes to the Regular Saver drive the decision. More to the point is the general degradation of the 123 products.

Many have been rationalising their 123 accounts. We've dumped three entirely and have converted the remaining one to a joint 123 lite and emptied it down to about £500. This saves 80% of the account charge but leaves you with the direct debit discounts and access to the Regular Saver. The cash went into NS&I bonds (2.2%) and BM Savings (1.45%).

One thing for others to bear in mind though, some branches are cashless.

I open my branch accounts with a nil balance and make my first payment as a faster payment when I get home. I then set up a standing order for the 1st of the following month

When the account closes I ask to have the money transferred online to a current account.
