    Yorkshire BS Issue 3
Downloaded the application form to fill in at home and to save time. Sun came out so I decided to go to the branch. Didn't take long, pass-book issued, thank you letter printed off and handed to me, got a copy of the T&Cs by e-mail on returning home. Couldn't have gone better and I missed the rain!

I did much the same today. I have now got issue 2 and issue 3, both with passbook.

Just returned from my local YBS branch. New account opened within 5 minutes. I know have both issue 2 & 3 with a passbook.

Lucky you!  Our local YBS branch (south-east London) will only open new accounts with an appointment! The counter staff reported that their regional manager had visited and told them "appointments only"!  I handed over our completed forms with cheques and they'll ring when the account is set-up and the passbooks ready to collect.
To be honest that’s what I expected at my branch. I went in with my forms thinking I would hand them over & they would post the passbook to me next week. But the branch was empty & the member of staff asked me whether I had the time to wait while he opened the account for them & there.

I opened mine in branch yesterday too although a 5 minute job it was not, at least it's open!

If some branches are going to insist on appointments, they need to change the information on their website which states: "There's no need to make an appointment, but you may occasionally have to wait at busy times."

Did you take in your completed application form, and a cheque made out to yourself? I did, and it literally was a 5 minute job, if that. Though I am an existing account holder (not normally using any Branch), and they didn't even want to see any ID from me. The place was deserted and I got the impression the lone chap behind the counter was actually quite grateful that someone had bothered to show up.....I was tempted to say "if only we could open this account online" but then thought of the better, as it would effectively have been telling him I wished he didn't have a job......

Unfortunately I couldn't go armed with a completed application form (printer problems at the moment) but, even so, it felt quite protracted.  Even though the branch was empty when I arrived and 2 people available at the counter, I was passed on to someone who would deal with the account opening in an interview room.  I waited approximately 10 minutes to be seen then the process in the interview room dragged on too much in my opinion for something simple, eventually back to the counter to pay in the cash for the initial deposit. Ah well, it's done now and thankfully do not need to do the account opening in branch process very often!

I have held a YBS account of one kind or another for years. I popped in to the  branch yesterday to open the RS and was told an appointment was now necessary but the assistant would check whether one was available immediately - which it was.

It still took around twenty minutes but I had time to spare so didn't mind particularly - the service was pleasant I and was offered tea or coffee..... :)

Anyone thinking of opening a Coventry BS account should note that it cannot be done entirely on-line. You can apply on-line but then you have to wait for the application form to be sent out, sign it and send it back - only then will it be opened.

Why you can't print your completed on-line application, sign it and send it I don't know!
  • I was just looking at opening a Penrith junior affinity rs for my son, but was wondering what happens if he turns 17 during the 5 year period..? It says that they have to be under 16 to open, but can’t see anything about keeping it open after 16, does anyone know please?
I don't think I can hang on til Friday...
