  • Building Societies pretty much run on Passbooks unless you specifically open an online only account with them. It acts as your statement as well, as they don't tend to issue them anymore.

Yes, I guess so. Monmouthshire also provide an account number, sort code and reference number to enable you to make an electronic payment into the account, which I've just done. Does anybody know if they're likely to provide an email confirmation that they've received the payment? (I suspect not)

I have registered for online access, but I'm not entirely sure that they'll manage to get that set up before the end of the month (though I'd be happy to be proved wrong!).

Oh yes, you can still do all of those things. SO, DD, Chq, Csh, FP, they might even be set up to receive Card payments.

I doubt they will email you with confirmation they received it. You'll have to post the passbook to get it updated with a list of transactions, depending how often you will use it. Generally best to get it updated at least once a year if you're using electronic methods. You will be able to see the account if you've ask for online servicing. I do like a Passbook. Everything in one place without remembering IDs and passwords.

Personally I don't see the point (unless you have no online access), particularly for a 1 year regular saver like this, where (once registered) you'll be able to view the account online.

I was a bit surprised to receive a savings passbook today from Monmouthshire BS. I hadn't realised that they would be issuing one, or that such things still existed! I can't fault their speed though, given that I only sent the form back to them on Tuesday morning.

    Mine hasn’t come yet. Cry.

Why have you done an electronic/faster payment? Did you not make an initial deposit via cheque?...

...or do you mean you've set up a standing order ready for 1st May?

They don't send send email confirmation of payment. Knowing Mon BS, you'll have online access very quickly. You can see any incoming payments/transactions online, although it takes a day or two to update the balance.

Maybe Stompa's cheque payment was for less than £300 (the minimum £20) and the electronic payment is topping this up for April.

My passbook has arrived too. I sent my form on Tuesday too, so they may be operating a first in-last out stack :). Forms that were returned before the Easter break are at the bottom of the pile.

As my cheque was for £300 and credited in April, my first electronic payment will be in May. I will set up a Standing Order for 11 payments.
  • I applied for the Monmouthshire regular saver but haven’t heard anything back yet, beginning to wonder if I will.

Yes, that's correct. I'd just prefer confirmation that the electronic payment has arrived before topping up to the full £300.

Update: A quick phone call and they were able to confirm that the payment was indeed received.

We sent our forms and cheques back in this morning's post. Now, what's the chances of our payments crediting in April??? Fingers crossed.
How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)
