Same thing at mine, but they took all my details and opened in when I left, when the systems were back up, sending book out in post. Very impressed with their service!

Also a serious case of Disability Discrimination.

I asked Virgin about this. They replied that" Our Regular Saver is a store exclusive at the moment, we update our products regularly and this could change in the future."
However, I noticed afterwards that they have a disability awareness team, so I might contact them. On their website they only refer to making stores wheelchair friendly, which is just a tiny part of the disability issue.

Virgin Money aren't alone in offering branch only accounts.

It has now been 6 months and I have been reliably informed that you can apply for Saffron BS's Reg Saver via its online banking. There is no mention of this on their website, but it can be done. :)

So for those who opened their online e-saver and are passed the 6 month eligibility period, log in, apply for a savings account on the right-hand side option/menu and select Regular Saver Issue 3.

The account is opened instantly, can be funded instantly and is viewable online.

this is very convenient for many but Saffron are starting to close branches - Frinton, great dunmow and sawbridgeworth are all closing on Saturday 13 July:(

    That's terrible news.

    Thanks for the info.

    Hi.

I live local to Great Dunmow and Sawbridgeworth, and I have their 3.5% Regular Saver.

Luckily I live near Bishop's Stowrtford and Ware branches, too, which are always very busy. I've only been in Great Dunmow's once and Sawbridgeworth has proved quite convenient for me (thought it's tiny) but I've always been the only customer whenever I've used them, so I'm not surprised.

It's a shame because Barclays has gone from Sawbridgeworth now, and Nationwide and TSB are not open Saturday's. Saffron is (soon was), though. And in Great Dunmow, they have Barclays, TSB and Nationwide, but only Nationwide is open in the morning on a Saturday.

Saffron doesn't offer a huge variety of online services either, or mobile at all, so it's a shame and it's surprising that they are citing this reason. They are mainly a mortgage based society.

I’m very disappointed they are closing - I have been going into the frinton branch regularly for years and they are wonderful - there are just 3 people working there but they are brilliant - so friendly, efficient and customer focussed

Shame - they used to have a branch in Stratford east London (near Maryland station) - I could never understand why they closed it as its a busy area. Its a right hassle now to go to Brentwood so I just deal with them by post and online.

I think you are expected to go to Colchester now - but its not Frinton is it!

Re operating the regular saver online - if you open another online account with them you can view your regular saver balance and transactions but cannot apply for it online or transact on it before maturity as far as I am aware.

It is terrible for the staff (although it looks like they work in multiple branches and/or have been offered redeployment) and also for the customers of the affected branches.

But it does look like they are all smaller branches in places close to larger towns with a branch, so perhaps it is true that they are trying to protect members interests generally by closing the unsustainable branches (rather than being part of a wider and ongoing branch closure programme).

Also, the closure of some branches might spur them on to improve their online offering and processes.

We can hope for the best (all round).
