OH has received the same letter today. Diarised for OH to open Issue 22 on 31st Dec.

Will be a shame for Leeds BS to withdraw their reg saver.

Yes I’m doing exactly the same and I agree, it’s a real shame that Leeds are no longer going to offer Regular Savers.

    I'll be giving it a miss I think[/QUOTE]

That would be a real shame as outside of the 5% Regular Savers, the Virgin one at 3% is one of the best I can find. You would need to open and close in store, but other than that there is little effort needed once the S/O is set up for a monthly payment. Or as karlie88 has already said, it can be closed by post.

I was in Kendal (Cumbria) last week, and noticed that the Furness Building Society branch there were heavily promoting the Lifestyle Saver 1.80% account (big posters in the windows), so I popped in to ask if I could open one even though I don't live within their operating area - and the answer was yes. This is also confirmed by their Web site which only says you must be resident in the UK to open one.
I only failed because I didn't have the necessary ID documents with me.

But you have to go into branch to open one. Pretty restrictive for 1.8% if you don't live in the area, but good shout for those who do.

Actually the Furness BS website does permit account opening by post. However, for new members it seems it's always obligatory to send in original (or certified copy) ID. Personally, I don't think it's worth the hassle for 1.8% p.a.
  • Hi Everybody,

    Here is this weekend's update.

    - Leeds BS regular savings account updated to issue 22 and note added to say that they will stop offering regular savings accounts from the beginning of January
    - Principality regular savings account updated to issue 19

I will do another update during the Christmas holiday period.

At quiet times, for a first one, c.15 mins. Usually less when you apply for following issues.

Make sure you have made an appointment and take appropriate ID.

It depends on the staff member and the extent to which they dot all the 'i's. The first one will take longer... I'd have said up to 30mins, but you need to make sure you have all the right ID and information they need.

Subsequently you will still need to take your ID, but your details should already be on the system so it takes slightly less time.

After the fifth or so at the same branch you might be able to get it down to 5 minutes or thereabouts. ;)
