KonMari 2018 - The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up

Oh I so agree about the plastic tat......it sickens me.
Anyway you have spurred me on.......2 duvets, 2 sets of bed linen, a throw, 2 pairs of curtains and a mirror loaded in the car and ready to go to the homeless shelter tomorrow together with a load of cardboad for the recycling centre.
When I look round it's hard not to feel overwhelmed but I will keep at it. I will get there one day.;).0 -
I now have a green dress, a jumper, a bag, two cardigans and a pair of trainers for the charity shop bag.
The dress must have shrunk in the tumble drier as it is now too short. I'm 5 foot 6 so a shorter woman might like it!:D0 -
I contacted my local council as GQ suggested re the videos.
That was mission in itself. They have a "live chat" function apparently but no link to it. I tried ringing and couldn't get to a person so I messaged via Facebook.
I got the following not very helpful reply:
"We normally suggest taking them to charity shops. We can't recycle them so they would go as general waste"
I'm currently awaiting a reply over WHAT charity shops and the proper waste centre. :cool:LBM 11/06/2010: DFD 30/04/2013Total repaid: £10,490.310 -
carrie, I asked at my chazzer of choice (a Red X with a very proactive manager who doesn't waste anything) and was sadly told that there is no way that they can get VCR cassettes recycled, other than the cardboard sleeves.
Drives me mad when I think that all households of a certain maturity are likely to be harbouring these in the tens, dozens, hundreds, and that they are all going to end up landfilled one day. Really wish I was a billionnairess and then I could draft in some boffins and work out a feasible national recycling scheme for them.
All plastics are not created equally or are equally popular with recyclers. They really like those flexible ones like shampoo etc comes in. Brittle plastics like flowerpots, plant trays etc etc are almost useless.
Have been allotment gardening this afto but, on the way up, stopped by a pal's for tea and chat. She has rescued a broken brolly which has been on a carpark near her place for months. She was inspired by my making her a shopping bag from the lightweight polyester fabric they are made from. That was a folding brolly, which limited the size of the bag, but this is a full-size one.
Because it had been lying on the ground for months, it was very dirty so I brushed off what I could, then soaked it in a bucket of cold water at the plots, rinsed and repeated, let it dry and then it will go through the wash. I can see a reusable shopping bag and perhaps another little bag or two in its future.;)Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

Thanks for asking GQ
Excellent idea on the brolly fabric!LBM 11/06/2010: DFD 30/04/2013Total repaid: £10,490.310 -
It's really useful stuff and any rainy windy day in an urban environment tends to produce discarded brollies on the streets. It's light, strong, pretty waterproof and can come in attractive colours (solid and patterned) as well as plain black.
This is a black brolly with the Sl@zenger logo. I have dismantled a fair few brollies in my time and was expecting steel ribs which could be recycled but this one had plastic ribs. The mechanism still works so I have stored it in the lottie shed, thinking I might do something artistic with it, on a pole, and some runner beans in summer 2019.
I'd've thought a branded product would have been made with a metal handle and ribs, confess myself surprised. Hey ho, life is full of surprises.:rotfl:Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

Bag of fabric scraps up for grabs on fr**gle and just given away a CD player to a grateful recipient. Bin bag on the go of assorted discarded stuff for next CS run
.
Shed has a large space down the middle now and a lot of empty plastic storage boxes....mind you DD1 room is looking a bit full:o well she is going to be away for at least 6 months or more so I have made her room Eb*y central - I reckon if its in there I am more likely to do something with it...traipsing out to the shed over the winter was not appealing!

I've seen a picture of someone using the frame of an old umbrella to make a yarn winder for skeins of knitting woll, but it didn't go into detail about how to do it. As those cost big money to buy I'd love to be able to work out how to make one as I'm currently acquiring chazzer jumpers to unpick.
I used to recycle every last scrap of plastic because our LA is quite accepting. But now I find myself wondering if the low grade stuff is just being shipped abroad and ending up in the sea because once it has been picked over in Indonesia or wherever it's none too carefully disposed of. It almost seems better for it to go to landfill than polluting the sea, endangering marine life and ultimately ending up in the food chainIt doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0 -
My bathroom is finished and the garage is looking wonderfully empty!
I may go in on Monday and see what else can go!Focus on contribution instead of the impressiveness of consumption to see the true beauty in people.0 -
I accidentally kondoed a couple more mugs today - the cat knocked them off the shelf with his tail & smashed them! One was a gift that my OH is a bit precious about (he had it specially made for me) & since the handle just broke off, I’ve recycled it as a small plant pot.
I’ve also added a burger press & a shot measuring metal thing to the c/s box since I haven’t touched them ever.
I figure getting rid of stuff one item at a time is still progress, however slow.“I want to be a glow worm, A glow worm's never glum'Coz how can you be grumpy, when the sun shines out your bum?" ~ Dr A.
