Just rescued an entire unopened stale loaf, 2 past-best eggs and the last dribble of milk in a bottle - by turning it into French toast to freeze! Saw it on Pinterest & thought I!!!8217;d give it a go instead of chucking a whole loaf in the bin!
Also used the ends of the loaf to use up some cooked sausages to make a breakfast !!!8220;muffin!!!8221; - added a fried egg & a slice of cheese to nuke for a quick breakfast one day.
Ooh, what do you do? Make it up and cook it and then freeze? how do you defrost to cook? I have a whole bloomer that OH bought and no-one has eaten and this sounds perfect (i don't eat shop bought bread, otherwise I'd have done something with it, but the kids will eat french toast)
I am using stuff up as we are on holiday from a week on Sunday and i don't want to buy too much. It means picking up bits and pieces from the local mini supermarket instead of a big shop but rather that, than waste anything.I wanna be in the room where it happens0 -
Hi everyone, looking to join in please, I have problems with my food hoarder mentality, last week I had to throw 2 heads of broccoli, I live alone but can`t stop myself bulk buying, okay for store cupboard but not for fresh produce, I currently have in my veg/salad drawer 1 1/2 cauli, 1/2 a red cabbage, 1/2 a white cabbage, 1/2 a hearted hispi ? cabbage, salad items, romaine lettuce, cucumber, 1/2 a red onion, 3/4 bag radish, most of a stick of celery, tomatoes not in fridge,
Made a lovely salad bowl yesterday, included black and green olives and capers, didn`t eat it as overindulged on some low carb doughnuts I made, so wasn`t hungry, use today or throw that too.
What about freezing if you get too much veg? I've got a big bag full of cauliflower in the freezer, went into Mr T one day and there were several great trolleys full of cauliflowers for about 10p each so I bought a few, broke them into florets, blanched them and froze them spread out on a tray so they didn't stick together then put them in a bag - then after all that hard work, I forget they existed :rotfl:. But now I've done my freezer inventory I'm back on track and it's good to have them ready to use and half-cooked already0 -
Frozen veg drawer chocker, carrots, parsnips, onions, leeks, some cauli, sprouts, swede, chilli, celeriac, can`t think of much more.Do I need it or just want it.0

Basically just put eggs, milk, cinnamon & vanilla flavouring into a bowl, made the French toast as normal by frying it, let it cool completely & then froze it in batches. I plan on sticking it on a bakin sheet in the oven tomorrow straight from frozen so I’ll let you know how that goes!“I want to be a glow worm, A glow worm's never glum'Coz how can you be grumpy, when the sun shines out your bum?" ~ Dr A. Hi chums ,back from my holidays and raring to go I brought back some butter ,soft cheese, a couple of eggs a couple of large potatoes and dropped into Aldi's just before getting home to pick up fresh fruit and veg and a few odds and ends so no more shopping needed now for at least 7-8 days I shall be using everything up that I can instead. I need inspiration for the soiltary green pepper that I forgot to take with me on holiday sitting on the top shelf of my fridge at the moment I know I could dice and freeze but I really want to use it up instead ,any ideas would be a help so thinking caps on ,what do you all do with the green pepper thats always left from a pack of three ???

I usually roast the green peppers when I do a roast dinner. Can't stand them raw.
You could also stuff one with some mince and onion and perhaps some rice or couscous as well for a main meal.

a bit of minced beef stuffed inside sounds like a good idea. I am not mad keen on rice or couscous but a savory stuffing sounds excellent
Thank you

I always have a melon in the fridge, partly because I try and buy package-free fruit and veg and partly because I love it- had the last slice yesterday and I'm not going to buy another until I use the bowl of apples which my DD's boyfriend bought then left when they came to stay. They're Granny Smiths and my least favourite apple, so they've been sat there a couple of weeks, so it's use-up time, with the promise of melon as a reward

Well, we usually have that lonely green one sliced and gently fried with thin strips of beef and onions, served with noodles and a dash of soy sauce, but joedenise's idea of stuffing it is good too. My "go to" stuffing is usually a mix of finely chopped mushrooms and grated cheese, topped with breadcrumbs for a crunchy topping (but I know you don't eat bread
).
Glad you enjoyed your holiday and well done on that haul of wool (saw your post on the OS Daily) - that will keep your needles clicking away for a while!Hopeless_Case wrote: »I always have a melon in the fridge, partly because I try and buy package-free fruit and veg and partly because I love it- had the last slice yesterday and I'm not going to buy another until I use the bowl of apples which my DD's boyfriend bought then left when they came to stay. Ooh, they're my favourite apple! I'm guessing they're perhaps a bit on the tart side for you. Maybe you might like them better grated into scone mix to make apple scones or how about adding to plain yogurt with a spoonful of honey and sprinkled with a little cinnamon or nutmeg? I find they go well thinly sliced in a sandwich with a crumbly white cheese like Cheshire or Lancashire.beenthere_donethat wrote: »There were three pots of Sacla Italia Pronto tomato and basil stir-in pasta sauce in the cupboard which had passed their BBE date. I blended them with a tin of tomato soup and added a bit of garlic puree, this morning, and it has made a batch of smooth pasta sauce now, which DD1 will eat.
I have a Dolmio garlic & tomato stir-in pasta sauce that's gone OOD so I'm going to pinch your brilliant idea and add it to a cheapy carton of passata the next time I need a pasta sauce. :TBe kind to others and to yourself too.0 -

So I stuck my French toast under the grill in the oven with the bacon this morning & it was delicious!!!!“I want to be a glow worm, A glow worm's never glum'Coz how can you be grumpy, when the sun shines out your bum?" ~ Dr A.
