I had half a punnet of strawberries in the kitchen going a little soft so I sliced them and simmered them with a three of wrinkled desert apples to make a tasty topping for yogurt. I need to cut down on the quantity of fruit I'm buying.
A suggestion from here for me has been to freeze single leftover portions of mash or cooked veggies. I've defrosted and eaten most of these this week as OH is away and there's only myself and the dog here. I've just cooked a small piece of chicken or fish, added the leftovers after minutes in the microwave andd bingo! a tasty meal, with very little food prep costing pennies. I can't remember who suggested it originally but thank you, it's been a very useful tip.0 -

Leftovers for DH & DSis & last two slices of both bread & corned beef for me. I am happy to be home & not throwing away food like DSis did every week while she lived in France:eek:

Hello everyone,
Lots of bits of food have been used up in the moorhen nest this weekend.
We got all of the bits of meat and fish that we only had enough for one person out of the freezer and created some very interesting (but tasty) meals.
Everything that wasn't eaten has been divided between me and DH and taken for lunch to work.
We did have some rice that we weren't going to use so I fed it to the chickens that I was looking after for a friend!
Have a lovely day everyone.:)0 -
No leftovers tonight :T I made exactly the right amount for the three of us
first time ever :rotfl:
Oven cooked lamb chops, mashed potatoes, fresh carrots & frozen peas + my DH made the most wonderful gravy :T:T Dinner was yummy & got the seal of approval from both DH & DSis :T
Now the bad bit- my two mushrooms have gone furry  but they won’t go to waste as the worms will have a treat tomorrow :rotfl: to go with carrot & potato peelings.

Used 2 very soft (brownish) bananas and an old orange in a fruit salad, and they tasted lovely.
My challenge for today is a red onion which had stuck to the back of the fridge and frozen, it's now defrosted and it soft and squishy, but I'm going to cut it up and see what I can do with it later!
My homemade humus has gone a bit dry and looks past its best but i'll add some more olive oil and use the last of it for lunch0 -
Hi everyone, looking to join in please, I have problems with my food hoarder mentality, last week I had to throw 2 heads of broccoli, I live alone but can`t stop myself bulk buying, okay for store cupboard but not for fresh produce, I currently have in my veg/salad drawer 1 1/2 cauli, 1/2 a red cabbage, 1/2 a white cabbage, 1/2 a hearted hispi ? cabbage, salad items, romaine lettuce, cucumber, 1/2 a red onion, 3/4 bag radish, most of a stick of celery, tomatoes not in fridge,
Made a lovely salad bowl yesterday, included black and green olives and capers, didn`t eat it as overindulged on some low carb doughnuts I made, so wasn`t hungry, use today or throw that too.Do I need it or just want it.0 -
Just rescued an entire unopened stale loaf, 2 past-best eggs and the last dribble of milk in a bottle - by turning it into French toast to freeze! Saw it on Pinterest & thought I!!!8217;d give it a go instead of chucking a whole loaf in the bin!
Also used the ends of the loaf to use up some cooked sausages to make a breakfast !!!8220;muffin!!!8221; - added a fried egg & a slice of cheese to nuke for a quick breakfast one day.“I want to be a glow worm, A glow worm's never glum'Coz how can you be grumpy, when the sun shines out your bum?" ~ Dr A. I used to freeze whole loaves, and take out what we needed every day, but sometimes found it difficult getting the slices off a frozen loaf.
I've now started to portion the bread into little packs of 2-3 slices. Only thing is I use thin, cheap freezer bags to put the slices in, so that's plastic use which I would rather avoid. The bags come in rolls of a about 200 for a pound.
I stack these packs in the top drawer of the freezer and just lift them out every morning.
Crusts I freeze till I've got a few, and then turn them into crumbs for coating chicken, fish etc.0
