I use, admittedly often a bit more expensive, little gem or romaine as I'm the only one eating lettuce and iceberg always ends up thrown out when it gets manky. They usually come in 2-4 packs. I put them in water like cut flowers any keep really well.....I also stick leftovers in my slightly manky left over veg bag in the freezer for soup too.

I do normally use romaine, they're my favourite, and do tend to last ages, but the iceberg have been so big and cheap recently that I've gone for them. They're not my favourite though, they can be tasteless and harder to cut - tearing is cutting down on the brown bits, which is good, but I'm finding the torn chunks harder to get as small as I like to go in a toasted mini pitta! But less waste which is good :)
  • I have done this with some kale. I had too much so I chopped it up and put it in a plastic tub for the next time I make some minestrone. I would throw it in the soup from frozen and it should be fine. My thinking is will you notice it's mushy in a soup lol.

Thank you! Actually fried it up with spring onions in the end to have with shepherds pie, was very nice.
I have been making a real effort over the past few days (although I did buy far too many snacks for a party we had, but I am going to use my often neglected willpower and not open them until I can take them to another party in a couple of weeks, hoping the same goes for the spare booze...). I made a cake with old bananas which turned out like a (tasty) brick. Luckily DD had made beautiful marbled muffins with mostly store cupboard ingredients so the birthday boy was still impressed. I used leftover bread, fruit and eggs from the party for eggy bread, and other leftovers for a picnic lunch. Tonight saw leftover veg go into a pasta bake and a salad for my lunch tomorrow. Just got to get DH to eat a few more cocktail sausages! And banana brick got shared by cousins after an outing today.
Thanks to everyone for all their ideas on this thread, it's taken me a while but I read all of it, and am finding it very inspiring x

I did exactly the same! lol

I had a phone call from my mam a 8am this morning on my day off no less! asked me to make corned beef pie for a leaving do at her work everyone had forgotten to plan for so today I'll be using up all those half used jars of jam with the pasty trimmings to make jam tarts.

If there's enough I'll drop some into my work and hopefully, they will donate some money to my fundraiser for St John Ambulance :)

For me it's taste. Frugal meals can be yummy meals. But there are some things I wouldn't skimp on. I buy nice (I.e. Expensive) coffee and tea. I wouldn't buy iceberg lettuce, as it is tasteless. I'm partial to a bit of halibut, and I like nice wine.

I'll happily splash out on something that's decidedly non frugal. What I can't bear is waste.

Me too, I don't mind spending on decent food/drinks but I hate waste with a passion!

I had the ends of some rather lovely but expensive bread which along with some bits of veg, bacon, cheese & slightly OOD eggs has been turned into what I hope will be a tasty savoury bread pudding which will be the basis of a few meals:D.
  • I have found an advantage to having full freezers :rotfl: same meal three nights on the trot :T lovely when it is a Ha*ry B*kers recipe - Sausage Casserole with crusty bread

    Hi All,

Popping in for some help please! My sister left two bags of Ald* frozen risotto after house-sitting months ago. One is butternut and the other Mediterranean. I have used part of the butternut bag and really didn't like it. They have been floating in my freezer for months and I wondered if any of you lovely people had any ideas to jazz them up?! I really don't want to waste them but keep putting off eating them!

    Thanks in advance.x

Is the butternut squash risotto too bland? What about adding some chorizo?

Good Morning chums ,well last day of my holiday and will be on my way home by 10.00 this morning had a great time and very little was wasted There are enough odds and ends left over to bring home for dinner tonight so I won't need to shop until tomorrow at least.I am at my DDs for dinner on Sunday so it will be mainly fresh fruit and veg and milk although I'm pretty sure I have some UHT milk indoors (I only ever use UHT, as I don't use a lot of milk and a carton lasts me at least a week) I don't eat bread so thats not a problem.I have a nice box of freshly picked (yesterday evening ) blakberries to bring home as well :)

Loved my holiday, but also looking forward to getting back to my own bed and routine and normality resuming. New month tomorrow so new challenges ahead

    Cheers chums

Glad you've had a great holiday. I've still got another 3 weeks. No food at all wasted. I also use UHT milk as find it better for us as we live a long way from the shops. We either use to end up with loads by the end of the week or run out and have to pay over the top for a pint or two in the little shop which is still a mile away!
