I love Brazil nuts, especially choc coated ones :p

I was never a fan. Mum was...

My parents used to buy a small bag of mixed nuts that sat in the bowl on the sideboard at Xmas. I remember using/trying to use the nutcrackers to open brazil nuts, hazelnuts and walnuts... I've actually got an easy walnut opener these days (not actually used it for 15-20 years, which is about when I bought my last walnuts)... there were also some other nuts in there, not sure what they were, smooth/pointed oval, with a pitted texture on the outside.

But I really only bothered to eat the walnuts as other nuts are just too hard.

It might be said "you can't like walnuts that much if you've not bothered buying any for 15-20 years" - and it comes down to that simple choice factor ... of only being able to choose 1-2 types of nut each year and so tending to plump for others... you don't get much of a walnut in its shell for your money.

  • I guess that's me right out of the idea of "Nuts for Christmas" then - as they're such a frequent item on the menu anyway due to my way of eating.

    I'll make that:
    - cashews
    - macadamia
    - pine nuts
    - pistachio
    - hazelnuts
    - almonds

Not particularly into peanuts - though I'll eat them as is and as peanut butter. Not particularly into walnuts - though again - I'll eat them. Brazils - if I'm hungry and that's all there is...

    Good morning everyone,

    See CFO's gone nuts:rotfl::rotfl:
If I had to choose just two it would need to be hazelnuts and cashews (I think). I usually get a bag of mixed (shelled) ones and a bag of either peanuts or cashews in for Christmas. If they don't get used I'll happily use them up:).
I've been awake since stupid o'clock, not sure why I seemed to go to fast asleep to wide awake in seconds and couldn't get back over. I'm now on my third cuppa, I'm washed & dressed and had breakfast. Unheard of me by this time unless I have an early appointment.
Grocery order arriving this morning, I've ordered some stewing steak to make a batch of beef stew. I'll cook it today to have tomorrow as I always think it tastes better the day after it's made. I've loads of eggs so lunch will be an egg & tomato sandwich. For dinner tonight I think I fancy a pork chop. I've some lovely FR ones in the freezer so will get one of those out to defrost.
Today's "damp dusting challenge" is the woodwork/doors in the hall. It's not a big space but there's a lot of wood and six doors. I think that will be enough bending for me. Must get my Christmas cards written I'll make a start on them this afternoon.
  • I have walnuts, pistachios and almonds in the fridge at the moment.

I've had a yoghurt and a cup of tea so far.

Nice & sunny out, but I'm sticking in today, I did briefly think about popping down to watch the Queen Elizabeth return, bit of a photo shoot, but she's not arriving until around mid afternoon, which is past my poncing about on buses time;)

    Usual porridge breakfast
Lunch, not sure but the egg option of Caron sounds tempting, modified to fried, not keen on boiled ones, smell & faffing puts me off

Caron, hope the FR pork chop is tasty, prompted me to check on the huge pannage ones I bought last week, they were over £6 each:eek:. They get priced up as they are prepped, £16.36 Kg, but my choice, I wanted FR and ethical so willing to pay for it

Dinner, very likely the remaining LO beef stew
there were also some other nuts in there, not sure what they were, smooth/pointed oval, with a pitted texture on the outside.
    .

    That sounds like Almonds

I like nuts but never buy them, sometimes I'll find some hazel nuts in a hedgerow the squirrels have not nibbled, and there is an almond tree near which drops them all over the pavement, and also a chestnut, but that one's sparse & skinny pickings
Other than that I crack a few walnuts at DD when there for Christmas

  • Thanks for all the poor toe good wishes. PN, I hope the wrist is okay!

I was meant to be working today... My agency phoned me yesterday evening, could I go to one of my favourite schools? Of course I said yes. Then woke up to a text, sorry, they've cancelled. Oh well. I'm expecting work to be trailing off now, in the lead-up to Christmas.
And with the toe... Perhaps it's for the best.

I'm going to write my Christmas cards today instead... I sort of meant to do it over the weekend... But never quite got around to it! I did do Mum's though, and posted that off on Saturday morning, but only because I'd bought hers separately, and it was cluttering up the place!

Rummaging in my cupboard, I've found 4 boxes of cards, in various states of opened, and new. I must have grabbed a few packets in the new year, but don't especially remember! Saves me a cost now though!

All this talk of nuts... I'm afraid that's one food I've never managed to like! If I absolutely must, I'll eat a few salted peanuts, but I've never liked any others. I don't like the taste, or the texture, and they always seem to get stuck in my teeth, which I hate!
Because it's fun to have money!

It's surprising just how doors can accumulate sometimes.

My hallway has: front door, living room door, kitchen door, under stairs cupboard door.

Upstairs hallway has: Bed1 door, Bed2 door, bathroom door, airing cupboard door.

In my house I've a total of:
    2 bedroom doors
    1 bathroom door
    1 downstairs loo door
    2 cupboard doors
    1 front door
    1x patio doors.

Total of 8 doors inside and out!

Still not had that toast; weather looked goodish/sunny, so I thought it a good day to go to the launderette as everything will be draped all over the place and if it's not raining outside then I can ventilate the rooms well.

Time for toast now I think!

Just took a quick peek in the full freezer.... there's not really a lot in there... but it's full.

1/ 2 bags of chips, 1 bag of hash browns, 2 takeaway boxes of swede I'm freezing.

2/ 3 250g portions of mince, 1 400g portion of diced beef, 12 meatballs, 8 chillies, 1/4 bag of peas, pack of mange tout, 2 carrot portions, 2 crispbakes. FIVE portions of s0ddin' MASH!

3/ (this is a half sized drawer). 5 bread rolls, pack of tortillas, pack of pitta bread, 4 small scones, a bag of about 8 small Yorkshires.

A hungry family of 4-5 could polish that lot off in two big meals! Total value about £10.

I could just squeeze the Xmas turkey joint in (800g) when I buy it ... but that'd almost be my lot!
