in our local charity shop they have a mens tweed jacket for sale. I know tweed is expensive but it is priced at £85!!!!! Does anyone who goes in a charity shop to buy spend £85? Considering the item has been donated I think that is overpriced.
That's a bit eye-watering - does the shop have the brand make & model so you know what the RRP is? As if it's some designer cut & of an exotic tweed, maybe £85 isn't Quite as unreasonable but it's still a lot!
    Very eye watering!
I've paid £20 for a Weird Fish jacket (RRP £80) and £20 for a (BNWT £99) Crew Clothing down jacket and £20 for a Austin Reed ladies wool/cashmere crombie coat.
And an original Crombie coat for OH (RRP £895 reduced to £595) for £15.

But I doubt I'd pay £85 for a tweed jacket.
  • I had a mooch around our local town today. It was pouring down and hardly anyone was about so I could have a really look.
In the end, I got :-
A warm, cosy Tog 24 fleecey, boucle walking top in pretty aqua shades
Pair of craghopper walking trousers that have zip off legs
A monsoon top. Gypsy style in blues and greens
M&S speziale t shirt top in burnt orange with a really nice pleated front
A fabric slouchy shoulder bag from accesorize that will make a fab beach/holiday bag
Pair of butter coloured white stuff jeans. They are going to be re-donated though because they are a funny fit on me, too tight on the knee/calves and massive around the waist - shame because they are really lovely (only £2.99 so I took a gamble rather than try them on)
Very pleased with my haul, I’ll have to make my charity shop trips on rainy days in future as I definitely had some smashing finds.

I am so lucky! Not only did I get sent to Wales for work on the day someone went amok at the shops near the office (Again) but That Man has pulled another blinder!
A Denby Chevron big mug with the chevron basestamp, a Denby Manor Green teapot 1 & 1/2pt (it’s Huggable!) and a familiar shape with a new-to-me pattern - a Denby Blue Dawn sugar bowl!

For himself, he found an artists box with an internal easel & drawers which just nicely holds the paints he wants to see the colour of & is happily setting about it with sandpaper, linseed oil etc until it is Exactly how he wants it...
He’s already put away the watercolour paper sheets he found.

Today I've bought a Weird Fish navy blue dress, it has swallows printed all over it, short sleeves, pockets, ties around the back and is fully lined, it is a summer dress but will be good with a navy cardigan for this time of year too - £4.50. A Pyrex casserole dish £1, a Hobbs breton stripe top, long sleeves, the body is white with thin navy stripes and the sleeves are navy with thin white stripes - £3.49 and lastly a F&F pencil skirt in brown and black, fully lined 99p.

A pair of black extra long Next shape and lift jeans in my size, and I really need them.£4.95 look to have been worn maybe once or twice only.
I'm rather pleased as my current pair of black jeans are by Mary Portas so are pretty ancient, since the brand died. They are now grey not black.
Actually it might be worth me dying them.

I was clearly a very good Magpie in another life, because i have had another day of bargains and adventures in second-hand land. I think I may have to have a week off to allow my bank account to recover, and because I don't want to annoy the charity gods too much after today. Next week I must do some donating! I did manage to have one embarrassing fail today as well...

Today I was in the more affluent neighbouring town for a haircut, and I thought I would CS investigate beforehand for an hour or so. First off from Isabel Hospice:

A 'Falmer heritage' jumper. This one: https://images.app.goo.gl/5dth9gTZJ29oSnaw9

I thought Falmer was a fairly decent mid-market make (that's what it used to be when I was younger!) but as the link shows, it now seems to be part of Matalan, or sold in Matalan. Which is no problem, I was just interested to find out. It was £4.50 and to be honest I don't need it, but I wanted it. I love grey and gold and this is nice and easy to wear round the house.

Next is a pair of Puma Golf trousers. https://images.app.goo.gl/d9kyk6pupPaMGv376

I have previous here - I don't play golf, I don't like golf, but I seem to have a thing for obscure-ish sports-branded clothing (I already have a golfing jacket, bought in a CS shop raid earlier this year). But I really like these trousers - I will put them away for next spring as they are lightweight, pale blue, and made of some fancy sport tech material. They are quite fitted (not sure I'd want to swing a golf club in them!) but would be good for walking in next Spring. £4. The CS had put GOLF TROUSERS on the label - in case of irate customers who didn't notice what they were buying?

This was also where I managed to have an embarrassing CS fail. When I was trying on the trousers and a few other things I noticed a tan-coloured belt with a studs and fastenings and complicated bits at either end. It reminded me of horse tack, and I like classic tan for belts and it was £1, so I bought it. Then I got home and realised, ladies and gents, that I had bought a handbag strap. Oh yes. I am almost sure of it. I wrapped it round myself and discovered it was not a belt, but a handbag strap. :rotfl: Never mind, I think the CS gods were playing with me to make up for my bargains later in the day.

Next stop was the Scope shop. I didn't have long before my hair appt, so I ruthlessly headed for the trousers section because I really need smart-ish work trousers for the winter and I have so many tops and jumpers and do not need any more. As I was browsing the rail I noticed several pairs of trousers in my size, in great condition (they looked new, really) with the label 'Marella'. I thought I'd take a chance on a navy blue pair - you can't try stuff on in this CS but you can do returns. So I bought the trousers for £3.99.

On my way to the hairdressers I couldn't shake the feeling that I should look up the brand. When I did, I discovered that it is Italian and stocked by John Lewis. These are similar to the trousers I found: https://images.app.goo.gl/d9kyk6pupPaMGv376

So there I was in the hairdressers for two hours, all the while thinking about how, inexplicably, there were 3 or 4 more pairs of these trousers still in the shop. So I went back and bought two more pairs - £3.99 a pair. I can't believe how lucky I was and once again I think people don't recognise the brand as it is mainland european and not high street. I am so intrigued as to how so many pairs in the same size and brand ended up on the rail - but I am now well stocked for the autumn with two pairs of black and one pair of navy trousers.

Finally, my hairdresser mentioned that a VINTAGE CLOTHING SHOP had opened in the town. So I had to go and have a look. I am so intrigued - when does something become vintage? What makes it vintage? Who decides? It was a tiny shop crammed full of clothes and I didn't have long to look, but I spent £14 on this: https://www.instagram.com/p/B2g9uZTHIv6/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link

To be honest, being used to CS prices this was a bit of a shock to the system. But something about this jumper reminded me of my mum - she died in 2003 and I feel like this is the kind of thing she might have worn in the 1970s. So although it wasn't a bargain, I don't regret it. As it is vintage (no idea of the brand, but there is a size label) the sizing is not like it is these days, This is a 14, it says - and I am usually a 10 or 12 on top in all major brands (M&S I am sometimes an 8). And I can get this on and wear it, but it is a salutary reminder of vanity sizing!

So, I feel like my head is spinning with new brands and new frontiers in vintage shopping. But once again thanks to the charity shop gods and the good people who donate. I am very lucky. And apologies for the wall of text, but I thought you would all enjoy my account of my finds today.

    Happy hunting! M100
