Flashing your lights at someone definately isn't road rage, and it's not just to warn people of a hazard (or cops!). And having to flash your lights probably means they aren't looking in their mirrors. The flash attracts their attention.
Flashing your lights means 'I am here', nothing more, nothing less. One of the primary rules of the road is 'drive on the left' so why are you driving in the middle or outside lane? Irrespective of speed, driving in either of these lanes IS bad driving unless you're overtaking, or in the case of a dual carriageway, turning right. Feel free to do whatever speed you like, in the left hand lane. But please don't confuse a flash with road rage - if you get flashed by another motorist, think about your own driving before that of others.
  • Yeah but it's usually coupled with the person sitting about 3 inches off your bumper and flashing the lights to say, get out of the bloody way! Definitely road rage. What the highway code says is that you just have to have patience, essentially. And don't worry, the road hoggers will get stopped eventually. As will those who pass on the inside.
