broccoli shame, am I the only one?

  • I have a confession to make.... whilst trying to cut back (been made redundant and am pregnant) and noticing how much the broccoli has gone up in tesco the last few months I took things a bit far the other day. I bought some broccoli but pulled all the florets off so didn't have to pay for the heavy stalk bit. Felt like a criminal when I'd done it and expected a hand on my shoulder. Even used the self serve tils so no odd looks from the cashier!

    Is this really bad!!!!!!!!!!? :embarasse

Did you not know the stalk contains the most nutrition. The stalk is the tastiest of the brocolli. What you do is once you remove all the florets off, cut a bit of the end of the stalk where it is the toughest - that is the thick end. Then simply get a small knife and peel away the outer skin of the stalk. Then slice the stalk in reasonable bite size and cook with the rest of the florets. If you then taste the cooked stalked and compare the taste with the florets, you will know instantly that the stalks is very sweet and juicy.

    Hello

Im with Kimberly... i scrub most veggies and chop them up and steam them.... any peelings I do get usually get turned into soup... only this weeken my local Aldi were selling 500g broccoli for 49c..about 35p -and it wasn't whoopsied.. i got 4, cut them up par steamed them, cooled and bagged it up and froze it. The 4 stalks went into a pan with some onions a potato, HM stock and some lentils and made a huge pan of thick yummy soup... enough for 3 flask fulls for hubbys packed lunch.... and don't get me started on the cog in the cabbage/cauli... they are lovely raw...

On monday I bought a huge broccoli for 34p in Lidl as their fruit and veg is all half price, I have no problems with any of their's not being fresh or sub-standard unlike my local co-op!
Give a person a fish and you feed them for a day; teach that person to
use the Internet and they won't bother you for weeks.:D
  • I saw a lady in Tesco taking the stalks off mushrooms when she saw me watching she explained that her family don't like them so she can't see why she should pay for them, makes sense to me.

  • In my opinion dividing a bunch of grapes is no different from dividing bananas as nothing is being wasted but breaking the stalk off broccoli and mushrooms is another kettle of fish. No one else is going to come along and just want the stalks are they?
  • hi, my kids wont eat the stalk but i confess i get my son to snap the stalk off for me lol, i worked in a fruit shop before i had my kids and this was common. we also had a costomer ask me for a knife to cut off the top of the banana stalk so it wouldnt weigh as much. i thought he was quite right.

  • ........and i taste the grapes and lift off the top box to get fresher produce beneath and open fresh boxes of mushrooms when there is already one open. its my dollar after all and if the supermarkets cant be bothered to manage their fruit n veg depts properly ( which they dont) thats their lookout.

  • This thread has made me smile, I started off thinking what a fantastic idea, why have I never thought of doing that (removing the stalk) but then I remembered I don't actually go to the store now and have a delivery and could maybe post a note asking Tesco to take the stalk off for me :D but thought that probably wouldn't go down too well, then I got to thinking hey I didn't know you could eat it, I'll just eat it next time, then I remembered I buy the frozen broc now so as to avoid any waste at all.......:rotfl: Next time I do actually buy some though i will attempt to eat the stalk and see how it goes down with the family :D .......... I have always removed the tomato stalks before purchasing though :D
  • I always use the fresh boxes underneath ,take grapes out of their bags ,take stalks off broccolli and have been known to take the red peppers out of the trio packs when there are no loose ones !!

beware when cutting your stalks off next time. I did get an idea though, when I order my Xmas gorceries if I get the brocolli I am going to add a note asking them to cut the stalk off. I will let you know if they do it!!
