my mum has always done this so do it automatically without thinking.

  • I've always done this without giving it a second though. So does my mum and my sister. It seems a logical thing to do to me. I'm not paying for a stalk I don't want. I also unzip bags of grapes and just take what I want. :T

I used to snap it off but now we eat it, it tastes the same anyway - good to add to soups etc....

I totally agree though why pay for something you're not going to eat.

I make sure that everything I buy is eaten, I refuse to waste food, especially as the prices are rising practically on a daily basis at the moment!

When I shop for fruit in ASDA I always taste the grapes before I buy, no ones ever said anything. Mind you I wouldn't do it with apples, that might be taking it too far. :o I once bought some oranges that were described as sweet and Juicy, they were neither, I took them back 2 weeks later when I was next at the shop I only shop fortnightly, and they refunded me no bother. I did phone them first to let them know the problem.
Shops used to have scissors by the grapes at one time so you could cut off a bunch to the size you wanted, now I think they just hope you will take the whole bag, I just snap them off too, your not forced to buy the bagful.

You lot had obviously been in my Sainsburys today because the brocolli display was full of floret-less stalks!

I don't do it because I think it keeps better on one fat stalk, plus you seen to 'lose' less of it in transit, but I will pick through the display to find shorter rather than longer stalks.

When I buy my fresh veg I cook everything and I mean everything, I just cut, wash and cook it's that simple. You will find that in most veg the goodness is in the stalks. Why not food process the stalks into soup etc. Your all mad to throw this away. If say you had Broccoli two days running and kept the stalks, those two stalks could help make a meal the next day.

I also think that if someone is caught taking stalks off they should be escorted off the premisses because if they had a business and their customers were doing this then they would lose money. It is vandalism and wrong, but I can understand why you do it if money is tight.

    Hello

Im with Kimberly... i scrub most veggies and chop them up and steam them.... any peelings I do get usually get turned into soup... only this weeken my local Aldi were selling 500g broccoli for 49c..about 35p -and it wasn't whoopsied.. i got 4, cut them up par steamed them, cooled and bagged it up and froze it. The 4 stalks went into a pan with some onions a potato, HM stock and some lentils and made a huge pan of thick yummy soup... enough for 3 flask fulls for hubbys packed lunch.... and don't get me started on the cog in the cabbage/cauli... they are lovely raw...

I have never even thought of cooking the stalk..... my daughter loves broccoli so I will be trying this! Does it taste like the florrets?

Yes, it tastes the same as the florets, but the texture is obviously different. :)

I love the stalk, and wouldn't buy broccoli without a nice tasty bit attached to the florets. :D

If money is tight, go for frozen broccoli every time (and any other frozen vegetables). As long as the stuff has been frozen not long after picking, it will probably have a lot more nutrients than the stuff sitting on a supermarket shelf: frozen foods loses some nutrients (mostly Vitamin C) through the blanching and freezing process, but nowhere near as much as vegetables that have travelled hundreds or even thousands of miles before they then sit on the shelf losing even more nutrients. The only problem is finding a decent frozen brand - Tesco frozen veg can be truely awful, Asda doesn't seem too bad, and what I've tried from Iceland seems quite promising.

In waitrose this week they had a display 'From the Heart of England' the brocolli there was prepacked at £1.99 a bunch (with stalks) that is £9.05kg - organic uk origin (shropshire). Next isle UK (kent) organic brocolli (with stalks) £3.65 per kilo - various sizes! Stalks or no stalks this is not on - I did fill in a complain/query form and await their response.
