Most supermarkets sell Asparagus Tips which avoids all that woody end problem, although you do have to pay a bit more.Terry_Tibs wrote: »I do it with asparagus , but they do take the mick and leave the woody base that you cant hardly eat.
I love Asparagus although it makes my wee smell weird.

Reason 94 to shop at Morrisons is that they cut the stalks off broccoli for you....

They use them to make the soup in the staff canteen. :rotfl:0 -
I always snap the stalk off!
Don't want that bit, so why should I pay for it?
They don't sell you:
Sprouts with a stick attached
Potatoes with the above-ground bit
Apples with a branch
Onions with leaves
Leeks with leaves
So why broccoli with 6 inches of stick?
Because most of the other things you mention aren't edible, whereas broccoli stalks are.
Sorry to be the lone voice of dissent here but I object to the broccoli " culling ". Not only because I happen to like the whole vegetable so would never dream of doing this, but it's wasteful. Chopped up broccoli stalks can be added to soups/ casseroles/pasta if you don't like eating them au naturel. And if you don't want to pay for the stalk, put it this way, why should someone else have to pay for the stalks you have left with a disproportionately small amount of floret ? Or the supermarket bin them because they are unsaleable now ?
If you want to save money, don't buy as much broccoli, or buy frozen florets. Or another vegetable altogether." Baggy, and a bit loose at the seams.. "~ November 8th 2008. Now totally DEBT FREE !~0 -

Actually they do. The sprouts will last longer if they are left attached to the stalk, particularly if you leave it in water. When we harvest our own sprouts, we store them that way and the will last for a couple of months.0 -

I can't believe people on here think this is OK. The shop is offering a complete product for sale, you can't pick and choose which pieces you want to buy. If I were the shop manager, and found someone doing this, I would throw them out the shop. What's next - take the skin off bananas before paying, or peeling your oranges!!!
If a lot of people do this, the end result will be either that all brocolli will be packaged in plastic, or simply that the price will go up to reflect the unsold stalks.0 -
I agree with kittyscarlet...
I respect your rights to only take the florets if that is really what you want to do and you can't afford to pay for a full head, but they WILL put prices up if people leave the stalks behind. They have had to transport the full weight of broccoli from farm to warehouse to store, but then they are only making money on maybe a third of it by weight. They'd have to triple prices to make the same amount of money!
But, like others said, if supermarkets didn't sell the stalk at all, just fresh florets the broccoli would not last nearly as long, and you would be moaning that the supermarkets are ripping you off with food that goes rotten the next day!
I know that supermarkets are probably guilty of a multitude of sins, but I really don't think selling broccoli on the stalk is one of them! Especially since there are people who like the stalk (including me!)!0 -
Ok, I have taken on board everyones comments, thank you.
I guess I don't worry about the florets 'going off' quicker once taken off the stalk as due to the fact I am off work at the moment and the store is a few minutes walk away I only buy what I am using that day!
I appreciate the comment about transporting the whole thing so I shouldn't pick and choose which bit I want but to be honest I also have a netto close by and they sell the broccoli sealed up, including the stalk for so much cheaper (when they have any - thats the problem!) that I could spend the same amount, get the same amount of florets but with stalk included!
So guess I will be sticking to nettos for broccoli where possible so do not have to feel guilty!0 -
buy frozen easier and always on hand.
But the last two shops I have been unable to get any and I love the stuff.
Reckon its all the fault of all the people snapping off the stalks so there has been a run on fresh :rotfl:

Well, i was gonna write what a fantastic idea and why didnt i think of it before!
But having read the comment on transportingfrom farm etc, i have to agree the price will get put up, and then where does it stop (de skinning oranges etc)
Next question.......What do i do with the stalk of the brocceli that i always through away??
How do i cook it and does it taste the same as the florets?is officially a GLEEK0
