I didn't want to be the first to say it, but .... yes, I'm extra-galactically brainy
though lopsided development comes with it's own price
Neighbour doesn't want all the kindling, there's too much! So its a jolly good job that unknown neighbour took a panel yesterday. The fencers are doing "the other fence", at the side return of the house - and they had to dig up the quinceit still has it's root ball, and the guy is going to drill some holes in the bottom of an unused plastic dustbin I have, so I can put drainage, compost etc in there and then put the quince in. Temporary, until I can decide where to put it. Once it's planted again, I can use it as a leafmould bin - collecting the leaves locally, like I used to, but back in the day I'd put them in black plastic bags, and that created a lot of single use waste.
I'm glad it's 3pm, their day is not far over - I don't want to share too much of their air, but I want to get out there and start on my garden's new life!
Very exciting!2023: the year I get to buy a car6 -
Getting fence done is fab, it makes you feel so much better and lighter 😀 I gave my old fence away on Gumtree, saved me £65 disposal cost 😳Lightbulb moment and house renovation debt 01.01.19 18500, 01.01.20 £11450, 01.01.21 £4980, 19.07.21 nil.

Hello Suze! Honestly, the garden is so open now, and looks the same (because it's all covered in mud, ahem). Fancy being able to sell your fence! Excellent idea! Mine is completely rotten, and literally 50% of it fell apart as it was moved - it's obviously better than my poor neighbour's, but I couldn't sell it with a good conscience.
The removal of the quince from the side return is amazing - even if it doesn't survive, it's worth it, quite frankly. I was too tired to pot it tonight, and temps here are -1, -2. It may not survive, but I really hope it does. I'll pot it first thing tomorrow, and then we'll see.2023: the year I get to buy a car4 -
Morning
Wow, I caught up on a bit of sleep overnight, even though it was also segmented, as we used to say. I think I'm going to delay anything financial till Monday, except for paying the fencer ... the first thing to do is repot the quince in the dustbin that's had holes drilled. I'd love for it to survive. After that, securing the drift of the soil because of the slope of the land, by using the small concrete posts that were uprooted yesterday.
I do also need to add a good bottle of wine for the neighbour who got inconvenienced yesterday, he's working from home and there was a lot of bellowing going on, what with one thing and another. And his girlfriend turned up, very unusual on a Thursday ... bit concerned he might not be well. My neighbour whose green bin I share was also a bit "off" with me, in the sense that I think he had the weight of the world on his shoulders - he helps a lot of people, and he looks like he's struggling.
Still, okay, gratitudes:
1. all three fences are done! The side gate is mended!
2. I've remembered about the brick shed, because the fencers stored their tools in there overnight, and the old kitchen cupboards are in there, ready to store stuff securely (ie without them being infested by creepy crawlies).
3. It's a beautiful sunny day today2023: the year I get to buy a car6 -
I bought a hat at the Suffolk Show a few years ago and it is very generous - we were out with friends (not this year) and the woman was saying she has a very large head and my hat fitted her fine - it is made by Cocoon in Oxfordshire. I think it had an offer on it for the show and was about £30 at the time (more than I normally pay but I really liked it)Save £12k in 2025 #2 I am at £4863.32 out of £6000 after May (81.05%)
OS Grocery Challenge in 2025 I am at £1286.68/£3000 or 42.89% of my annual spend so far

They have a lovely website, SL, and very stylish hats and coats. They even invite people to visit their workshop (which is absolutely gorgeous). Trouble is, I need hats that cover my ears
every single bone in my head aches in this kind of weather if I don't get protection like that - it's why I've been wearing an ear protector and a woolly hat at the same time recently
Freezing outside today! I really hope my quince shrub survives. I've been really tired, but about 3pm I got myself together to spend half an hour putting drainage rubble into the dustbin/plant container, then used a 45l bag of compost in there, hopefully surrounding most of the quince, which was **really** heavy to lift. I've put it under the rhodendron and hazel trees, it's where I hide sensitive plants. Which meant I saw the wobbliness of next door's herbaceous stuff after my fencer had finished with itthe bottle of thankyou booze is going to have to be a good un.

Astonishingly not
what's on the list is painting said fences
even though I have other items on there that *are* for workmen to do. Consistency isn't my strong point in all this, but it's huge in terms of my privacy and my comfort, and how I can start to work on the garden - digging the fork into the soil to aerate it after those heavy boots have been all over it will be a good start. Temperature is still below freezing here, so I'm not doing anything outside just yet.

Does the fence actually need painting? I've always had pressure-treated fence panels/featherboarding), so no need to paint (other than for cosmetic reasons - I've just grown plants in front of them instead!).6
