Thank you! Haven't done the pinterest thing yet, even here Christmas preps are taking up a bit of time, but I will, I love it.
Ah, Pinterest:j. Guaranteed to steal hours of your life:eek:. Been there, done that so many times:o. The enticing photos and one fascinating link leading to another means I could happily get completely lost in a world of my own on there discovering things about interests I never knew I had.
I know you advised beanielou to step away from the floor tiles. I should step away from Pinterest:rotfl:0 -
Ok - clarifying my remark about polishing granite - by polish I mean wipe over with a damp microfibre cloth and then dry with another microfibre cloth - no cleaning products involved (except maybe a little w-u-l from a sink full of water run for dishes) So a sort of water-on/ water-off polish. My granite is black (nero assoluto) with just an occasional sparkle so shows fingerprints, smudges etc. I also have a run of granite along one wall 5m long, plus the rest of the worksurfaces elsewhere in the kitchen, so even just water on/ water off 'polishing' takes enough time
Hidden drawers - I have one above my bin - so you open the (full unit height) drawer to pull out the bin with it - and above the bin is a 'hidden' drawer where I store bin bags, foil, baking paper etc. My bin has a lid, but it sits half on/ half off it and there is no food waste/ wet wrappers in there, so no smells. My hidden drawer also makes me smile - and people think it's really neat. It's just a way of making use of wasted space
I was also thinking about getting rid of wall cupboards - but didn't want glasses and mugs under the worktop - it just seems wrong!
Another vote for toasters on trays - much less mess! (and was a handy way to quickly carry the flaming toaster out of the kitchen to the garden when one caught on fire earlier this year!)
Floor - easy clean. We had porcelain tiles last time - huge great things which looked fab but were super cold to stand on, took ages to dry when mopped nd the grout lines were slightly too dipped in between - making them a dirt trap. It also meant that nothing dropped on it survived - crockery, glass, ovenware, phones......We now have k@rnde@n parquet style flooring - we also have it in our hall where it has been wonderful for the last 7/8 years. However, pure black flooring in a kitchen shows up every little crumb! And I'm not a good housewife!Easy to clean, though (when I do it....) However, a good lino type covering would look just as good, to be honest - and be way cheaper.
Not sure how tall you are - but consider space for something to make it easy to reach things at the top of wall cupboards. Anything I have at the top is used relatively infrequently (eg excess homemade jams)and I have an 1kea Bekvam step stool to help me reach it. It's solid and sturdy and gets used by people to sit on at times. I've had a folding type one before, but never again since I fell off one many years ago. xI am the master of my fate; I am the captain of my soulRepaid mtge early (orig 11/25) 01/09 £124616 01/11 £89873 01/13 £52546 01/15 £12133 07/15 £NILNet sales 2024: £200 -

I have wire drawers in the section of the oven housing unit that I don't have a second oven for. I use that for weird but useful things (salad spinner, hooks for mixer, a funnel, paper cake liners and disks, pastry cutters - I don't know, maybe I hoard) - and homemade jams on the other shelf. and we used two drawer fronts braced together to front the remaining space which is a built in drawer. Maximising storage.
We swapped out our wire pull out larder cupboards for ordinary cabinets and bespoked the inside for storing bins, buckets, crates of jars (empty - for making jams, pickles and chutneys) and the ironing board. I wish I had used some wire drawers in these so I could see what is at the back on the top 2 shelves though...Save £12k in 2025 #2 I am at £4863.32 out of £6000 after May (81.05%)

So I finally made myself register for online banking with my new bank, which was really easy, but discovered I need something called a card reader ... nobody said anything about that, so I only enrolled when I needed to use it, argh. And I can't use it. Live chat couldn't help. The queue at the bank made me lose the will to live. And I have to pay it by December 28th. This is totally of my own makingbut I do think someone or some document at the bank could have mentioned card readers. Hey ho, I've ordered it now.
My solution: Pay the cc with a savings account which is online. I hope that works - otherwise, its a queue at the bank after Christmas!
I did buy some of the amazingly cheap veg - 2kg tatties, llb sprouts, 1kg carrots and 400g red seedless grapes for £2.70

Like you, my sister uses microfibre cloths all the time ... I'd love to have granite, in lots of ways, it's one more thing I'll investigate: "worktop" is a whole pinterest topic, I think!Hidden drawers - I have one above my bin - so you open the (full unit height) drawer to pull out the bin with it - and above the bin is a 'hidden' drawer where I store bin bags, foil, baking paper etc. My bin has a lid, but it sits half on/ half off it and there is no food waste/ wet wrappers in there, so no smells. I'll check out the Bekvam, I like the idea of people sitting on it sometimes - they *should* be able to, of course, if you can stand on it, but I like the multifunction, and there won't be that much seating downstairs.
