    happy Halloween fabbers

My children have had the flu spray annually for a few years now and they have it done at school, which is really convenient.

Lli hope you rocked it today in your devil horns.

Humpty and sugar I hope you both feel better soon.

I took the children trick or treating this evening. I really didnt want to, but they begged (oh, the irony). There were about 5-6 houses on our block with pumpkins outside, so they were happy enough. Plus we had pumpkins outside for any trick or treaters.

I really felt the cold yesterday and I ordered some fleece lined trousers for me and some fleece lined joggers for OH. Plus, I bought an office cardie to wear at work.
  • I was wondering whether flu "injections" are still being given to some people that way - ie via a needle jabbed into the arm.

During the last week I was watching a tv programme and it featured young children at a primary school being given flu "injections" and theirs were given by pumping it up a gadget inserted into their nose. No needle at all and the method clearly didnt bother them a bit.

Therefore if they are getting it this way - then there is absolutely no need for anyone to get it via needles shoved into arms any longer.

EDIT; I just googled "flu vaccine children" and info. comes up about this - and Google shows a photo of what I mean.

An article that came up is:

    https://www.webmd.com/children/vaccines/flu-shot-nasal-spray#1

and it includes the sentence "For adults, doctors found that the nasal spray works just as well as the flu shot". Useful for people to print it off if they intend to have the vaccine - to show any doctor that might try to say that that method is "only suitable for children" when probably what they really mean is "It costs all of 20p more to do it that way - and so I'll lie and tell adults it doesnt work for them".....

My grandchildren have the nasal spray, I never thought about it for adults but I have to admit it was the most painless injection I've ever had. I actually came home and looked in a mirror to see if there was any sign of an injection as I literally didn't feel it which is rather ironic with how I've felt since.
  • Last year when I had my flu jab, the site was red and swollen for weeks! Been OK this year though.

    Hope you feel better soon.

Isn't it weird how it varies. I've had it for years now and never had any reaction, one year I had it on Christmas Eve and even the nurse said that was chancing it. I can't even say it was a different batch as my husband had his at the same time from the same box and he's been fine. Still it is much better than flu. I did have flu once at Christmas, I felt like the living dead.

I suspect that very often just how much one "feels" any such medical procedure is down to how expert (or otherwise) the person administering it is.

Some staff just are heavy-handed and/or couldnt care less and others have a better skill level and try to minimise pain. The trouble is that one doesn't know which category they come in until too late and one thinks "OUCH! Got a duff one here doing this".

I know I hadn't realised that applies with electrolysis, for instance. I've had a noticeable amount of that - to remove skin blemishes over the years. I know for a fact "it's no big deal" normally, provided the blemishes are sitting somewhere on one's body that there is a layer of fat underneath them for cushioning. But a recent experience with a woman here and on an area where there quite definitely was a cushioning fat layer had to be stopped - as she kept hurting me trying to do it. If I'd realised she was a duff one (despite her training) then I'd never have gone near her. Am now trying to remember to put teatree oil on the warts on legs concerned (as natural way to remove them) - as I'm not prepared to risk looking for one of the few other options available in this area for removal. Or I might just wait until I have a home visit and go to the one I've used there before.

    Good morning lovely ladies

How are we all. I have been up and about and already been to Aldi and done my food shop. I have done a fridge/freezer inventory and hopefully apart from milk and fruit and veg I am Hoping I have enough food in to last until I go on holiday. I want to try and have a nice frugal month.

Spoke to my plumber yesterday and after I explained I was going away for 14 days instead of just 4. Or 5 nights as originally planned he has agreed to do both my new bathroom and my central heating at the same time. Yippee!!! Makes perfect sense. Do it all. In one fell swoop whilst I swan off on holiday. :rotfl:

I have really missed my baths, especially when I'm sore and stiff. I know it's a little thing but I do so love the luxury of a soak in the bath. Showers always seem so spartan by comparison, and they do nothing to ease aches and pains.

    What's your little luxury.

I was thinking about this today. Let's Play a game......and share some tips.

    We can call it ........

    Life's LIttle Luxuries......

or How to Live a Champagne Lifestyle on a Lemonade Budget. :rotfl:

SUgarbaby I am always soooo impressed by Your minuscule entertainment budget and all the exciting things you manage to do. So yes any tips on entertainment, travel and fun stuff as well as beauty, health, interior design, decorating etc.

One little tip I thought about yesterday. I keep my nail varnish In the fridge, stops it going thick and gloopy. The varnish I used yesterday must be two years old but it's perfectly fine.

Right I better get cracking. I need to ring the cruise concierge services to find out sailing times etc and then book my rail tickets. Hope it's not too late to get a good bargain. :rotfl: luckily I have an uptodate senior railcard. :D

    Have a great day.

P.S. I appreciate that some might think my 14 day cruise is the height of extravagance. But, here's the thing. Going away and leaving the house empty so that the workmen can just crack on speeds up the process and saves on labour costs, as well as avoiding the need for me to live in freezing cold chaos.

When I priced up 5 nights in a hotel for a city break in the U.K., when I added in rail travel, a couple of taxis either end, getting out and about, meals, and spending money then it really started mounting up.

The cruise was a last minute bargain offer and really good value for money. All meals are Included of course as is on board entertainment, so other than a bit of spending money it's not going to cost much more than 5 nights in the U.K.

Good tip about nail varnish, LL. I've just put a lovely one in the bin. I've been wearing a single coat of clear for the last week. It's lasted well, giving a subtle shine to my nails.

Well I managed to get a reasonable deal on rail tickets. Problem is although I can go for a timed train on the outward journey, I have to have an open return for the homeward journey and that means paying extra. Still I'm happy enough with what I've paid.

Don't know if any of you travel much by train but I find my railcard is well worth having. It knocks a third off the price so it's paid for itself several times over. I bought a three year one this time.

Just need to think about my holiday wardrobe now.

I have booked a hair cut for next week, which gives it 3 weeks to settle down before I go. I do find it takes me a couple of weeks to get used to a haircut. Not sure whether to have it cropped or carry on trying to grow it a bit. It's just at that in between difficult to manage stage at the moment.

Polly. I often wear clear nail polish. It gives a nice subtle shine. Although regular buffing is better because it helps keep nails strong and healthy as well as giving a nice sheen but Clear polish is great for a quick fix.

    Hello Ladies,

I am still feeling the effects of having a bad cold. I had to go out locally to my nearest Poundland to stock up on cold and flu products as my symptoms are still having a negative effect on me and I was almost out of everything. I waited until the heavy rain had stopped before I went out.

Right now I wish that I had not put off having my flu jab this year, now I have to wait until this cold has completely left my body before I can have mine done.

Humpty I really hope that your arm is beginning to heal today. It is a shame that you have had a bad reaction to your flu jab. :o

LL and Pollypenny with regards to having gloopy nail varnish the cheapest remedy to make it usable again is to add 2 or more drops of nail polish remover , shake thoroughly and the nail polish will be usable again. You need a light hand with the nail polish remover, so a drop at a time until it looks and feels like the original consistency will do the trick. I learnt this trick years ago from one of my older sisters. Thanks to Poundland shops I have lots of good quality brands of coloured nail polish that do not tend to go gloopy even when I have owned them for 3 years or more and I do not store them in the fridge.

My biggest little luxury is books. I simply could not live without them so thank goodness for Poundland shops where I can buy hardback, soft cover and paperback books for only a pound each. I currently have over 100 new books waiting to be read. Absolute bliss for me to look forward to. :j:D

LL you are lucky to have found a really good deal on your 14 night cruise and to have a plumber that you can trust to get your new bathroom and your central heating done while you are away. :D Your new home will be even more to your taste when you return home and you can have baths and ensure you keep warm through the winter. :D

I applied for and got a Warm Home Discount of £140 from my Energy supplier as I am in receipt of one of the qualifying Benefits. :j:D:T I was originally going to put the £140 that I had saved on Electricity costs towards spending money for my holiday next year, but now I will be going to Birmingham from the 6th December to 16th December to stay with my sister H and go to 2 Christmas Dances in Birmingham with my sisters. :D

I told my older daughter and she applied the same day as I did and also received her Warm Home Discount this week. :D

Great news about the plumber being able to sort out the bathroom and the heating while you're away LL. And you're right to offset the fact you won't be heating the house for a couple of weeks against your holiday cost. And if you have a frugal month of eating as well it all helps.:)

I meant to comment about batch cooking. I always have some HM ready meals in the freezer. When I was in Home Bargains a couple of weeks ago, they had tines of pulses at 4 for £1: chick peas, cannellini, red beans, butter beans. I made a veggie chilli and it's delicious.

I love that Adele song sugarbaby. She sang it when I went to the O2. I'm going to listen to it now.:)

I have thermal trousers that I wear to football when it's really cold but they're not the smartest. If I'm going to be out in the cold walking or sightseeing I find leggings really good. When I went to Poland in November last year I wore leggings under my jeans during the day. They really keep the draughts out and it meant I didn't have to wear my heavier, long coat to keep my legs warm. They take up next to no packing space and they're useful for relaxing in the hotel room too.:)

That's motivated me to do my nails later tonight. It's been over a week since I cut them back and the shellac was removed and they're starting to grow a bit and looking quite healthy.:)

I agree. Only today I was thinking that I need to plan ahead to make sure my hair is at its best for various Christmas events.

In fact, I think I'll probably count my hair as my biggest luxury. It's certainly the most regular expense. I find spending on having the highlights professionally done and a good cut at a fairly expensive salon well worth the money.

I've had a massage and facial today. That wasn't expensive as it was a Groupon deal.:D I've got 2 more similar vouchers which expire before the end of the year so I must book up appointments for those PDQ.

    Back Soon.:)

I have tried the drops of remover in the nail varnish. It had gone beyond that. My nails have just recovered from too much nail varnish over the summer. They are increasingly ridged, too, with one looking positively corrugated, so the buffer is an essential tool.

Marks used to sell a superb Magic Buffer, only two sided, but long and flexible. The blocks, with four sides are not so good. Luckily, I have found a fairly good thin one in Sainsbury's - I bought four!
