A bottle of wine, a few brandy cokes, Mum and I talked the night away.
Mum never knew about the times I was attacked in Cyprus. My Dad has shushed it all up.
I was talking about the episodes and mum looked at me in total disbelief. She never knew about the attack on me when I was only 14 and I was throttled by a Irish ranger on tour, ( I would have said strangled- but as I survived it that's the closest description). She just thought that I was being a fast teenager about the things I wore, and had never quite understood my obsession of not being able to be touched on the neck.
She also wasn't aware of the time when paratroopers tried to take me away from my sister and her husband on the beach.
40 odd years of my life she was blissfully unaware of the things that I went through. Dad knew?
But why didn't I talk to her about it and tell her then?
Because I was a RAF child and we had to follow the rules, if I had spoken out we would have been punished as a family. We would have disappeared from the island and what I went through would have damaged my Daddy's career. That's what it was like in those days.
But I thought Mum knew. Apparently not.
If Dad was alive today I would've asked him why he didn't tell Mum, and why I was as a child sworn to not tell.
When the second episode happened and I was attacked by a group of visiting paratroopers I was basically sworn to secrecy by the RMPs, or I could ruin my Dad's career.
I have lived with this for over 40 years.
Yet tonight my Mum found out about it by a random chat and a hot toddy!
What else did Dad and his military background cover up?

If there is one thing I know, it's that we never know what the person next to us has been through and we should never judge with out the facts.

  • Mooloo 40 years ago service families were as you say pretty well under the control of those in charge . Most of us would react strongly to abuse of our children but as you were abroad with your dads livelihood at risk he probably believed he was protecting the family . There wasn't the awareness back then of how damaging it could be to a young person and colour their future . I'm not excusing him by any means but we can't change the past however we wish we could .

You've bravely put things out there now and though not the ideal start to a holiday your mum can offer you the comfort you didn't get 40 years ago .

27 years ago my youngest was abused by a trusted teacher when she should have felt safe in school . She was 7 years old and told no one as she believed it was her fault somehow and hardly understood what had happened .

It ruined decades of her life as we discovered recently it had triggered Borderline Personality Disorder which at the age of 13 was wrongly diagnosed as Aspergers

Her life spiraled out of control and she suffered for decades . She finally told me her big secret a couple of years ago . Luckily our amazing Doctor took over . She got her diagnosis early this year and has had all the help she needed to reset her life and refuse to let one event define her .

The thing is Mooloo you're still here as is my dd although there were times we thought we'd lose her . Both you and she survived and that's the most important thing of all .

Try to enjoy your holiday .

After breakfast a short drive into town. Strange feeling as the Porter is also the parking valet. They take your keys and bring the car to the door!
We took a slow stroll to find some hairspray for my Mum, had a cuppa around 11. Cut my finger on the door so next trip the chemist got plasters.
A little further stroll and a few photos of the town and then lunch. Not the best in the town but we know now where not to go.
Return to the hotel, and a glass of wine. Then we are back in the room, where I made us a proper cuppa. I brought my own kettle, cups and tea/coffee.
We're watching Father Brown on the TV
We have dinner booked at 7.30.
    Posh frock time!

Most expensive meal we have ever had, to be honest it was nothing to write home about.
Elegant hotel, we dressed for dinner, but actually very few people did. I think I was probably the best dressed person, Mum said I looked tall and elegant and when I walked into the room heads turned!
Ha, wish I could have been 30 years younger, it would have been a ego boost. I wasn't sure what exactly I should wear, so I went for a mid calf lace dress with bolero jacket on top, in navy blue. Most women were in trousers . Sign of the time I suppose. But they will see me in dresses more than trousers.

    Time for bed. Merry Christmas.

    Merry Christmas Mooloo! :)

Hoping you have a wonderful relaxing time whilst you're away and come back feeling refreshed and ready to take on the world.
Your outfit sounds absolutely lovely... just the type of thing I would love. Did you make it yourself, and if so did you use a pattern?
It doesn't sound as though you're having much luck with eating out... hope you find somewhere better very soon.
    I Believe.....
That it isn't always enough, to be forgiven by others.
Sometimes, you have to learn to forgive yourself.

Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery
Today is a gift. That's why it is called the present.

happiness isn't achieved by getting extra things,
but by getting rid of the things that make you unhappy
