A final though, I would encourage you to rent somewhere for a year to find out what it’s really like before sinking your hard earned money into a property.
Actually living somewhere gives tremendous insight, you get to know the bargains and the things that seem like bargains but are not. You get to know the area you could live and theones that seem great on the surface but actually are not.
You may feel you know the areas from your holidays but you haven’t been there for all seasons and really understood the costs the benifits and the downfalls.
Rent then buy.0 -

I don't plan on moving completely at the moment.
I was planning on staying here in the UK and still working, but from home. Then going to Portugal in the Holidays and doing the place up, with a workshop etc where eventually I could run sewing holiday retreats. Or occasionally do a bit of B& B through the Summer months.
I was not planning to Emigrate.
Firstly I would have to apply to the courts to be able to take Dgd out of the country, and I think her Mum might veto that.
When I am 67 then and only if I still want to, and I have established my presence there, would I consider a move.
I would definitely have a Healthcare plan in place before I lived anywhere. The rules for renting out property etc are also different than here.
I would love to go and rent for a year and did discuss it with Mum and my Brother, but as I live in a Housing Association house I would not be able to leave it for more than 30 days at a time. If I didn't like Portugal I would have nowhere to come home too, so actually renting would put me at a huge disadvantage, and of course I would need to be able to earn a living etc.
I am still looking at all the possibilities and of course Brexit is a worry. When I die I will know that I have lived, loved, mattered and made a difference, even if in a small way.0 -

You 30 day limit apples whether you rent or buy if you keep your flat!
How many people attend your sewing classes here? It seems to me that you are frequently saying they are under subscribed so how do you think they will be more of a success in Portugal?
I may sound discouraging but I am trying to be realistic, life is difficult for you here but there is less money in the system in Portugal particularly away from the tourist areas that is why houses are so cheap. There is no work and no people!
Sorry if I sound persimistic but this is a huge step for someone’s who’s finances are on a knife edge like you report.
Don’t turn a dream into a nightmare, plan carefully, look at all possibilities0 -

Yes I totally understand where you are coming from.
I am and have been researching for a long time. The finances will even out as I stop being Bank of Mum, stop investing in stock for the shop, and downsize the business.
I must admit it has been about a year since I did a costing for the cost of living. I am well aware that there is little money in Portugal it was struggling a few years ago economically and not as bad as Greece, but not brilliant. I don't expect to have many local people as customers out there. The sewing would be Destination/Retreats for a group at a time.
I will still be promoting them next year, as I reduce the shop side of the business, and in the new year I am hoping to get started on some Tutorials etc that will work with my adverts in the Sew magazine.
I plan to arrange weekend sewing retreats using a local hotel combo. I have some online followers and have done some surveys and got feedback about sewing Holidays.
I have 8 months still at the shop, and I hope that I will be developing the workshop through that time, because even if I no longer have the shop it is still possible to hire venues if it does take off. If it doesn't take off then I will know that the other options are like my Brother and Sister in France, is to do Rooms occasionally.
As you say, I need to continue to do my Homework and make sure my Budgeting etc is on the point.
I will still need to make a lot of cushions and bunting to make the deposits anyway! When I die I will know that I have lived, loved, mattered and made a difference, even if in a small way.0 -

I will say no more Mooloo, you know I wish you good luck with your dream.
I will show everyone I know my cushions and bunting in the hole they send you an order! Maybe you could try Etsy or another makes venue, lots of opportunities for wedding, birthday bunting etc.0 -

Mooloo, whatever you choose to do you have been extremely positive and resilient in your outlook.
I do agree with Ognum, you do need to tread carefully, although I am sure you are aware of all possibilities.
Good luck.0 -
Actually, Im not sure she would be under subscribed there. As our current culture catches up with other cultures in Europe, re divorces etc, then there is a generation of people in europe who are not being taught what their grandmothers and mothers would have taught them
Cooking lessons are doing well in Italy for example, it's possible [ and I would go more with probable] that skills such as sewing would be in demand.
If you do go out there a few weeks at a time, it might be as well to ask or to see how many people would sign up for those type of classes, ask in local shops etc.Non me fac calcitrare tuum culi0 -
