I really want one of these, but I know my parents are going to have serious issues with me sticking a hose out the front of our house.

I've got a really small, south facing room and with my computer on it gets really hot (30.8 C at the moment)

Anyone got any ideas for any other products that might work? I've already got a fan on full blast and not getting anywhere.

Paul - stick some ice or similar in front of the fan and you have an air "cooler" (the cheap things some places sell which aren't air conditioners but pretend to do the same job!). Might help

I had a look in my local store this morning and all they had were 2 models, a 9k btu and a 12k btu at £179 and £224. The 12k one had an oscolating output fan to help distribute the air better and a remote control, plus it was a heater as well as cooler.
The 9k one was unboxed and working and appeared to have 2 x 110mm round outlets to remove the hot air? Why 2 ? anyone who has bought this model shed some light please?
I have one unit I bought from Homebase 2yrs ago and that has the normal 1 outlet to extract the hot air from the room.
All Dell'd up ;) several times over :)

Argos are selling the exact same machine in their June Sale brochure for £179.xx branded as 'Challenge'.

So at £135 from homebase its a good price. I got one, you got to be strong to carry it upstairs but it works pretty good. It's noisy this mainly seems to be the noise of the air being blown through the inards rather than the fan or compressor or whatever.

Could you sleep with it on because of the noise? Well you probably wouldn't want to but I fell asleep yesterday afternoon with it on no problem heh. I was a little worried about the noise of the exhaust air pipe disturbing the neighbours but it's not a problem I went outside and had a listen.

It's big and bulky and noisy but after i've sat in a room with it on and then left that room for the 28 degrees that is my house i'm pretty pleased with it, for the price.

just to clear up a few things

it has a 12 hour timer with 2 modes
turn on in 1 to 12 hours
turn off in 1 to 12 hours

it has a thermostatic control so you can set the temperature you want the room.

You can make it turn on at a certain time (in 1 to 12 hrs) and cool the room to a certain temperature

They didn't have these priced at all at my store I put it on a flat trolly and wheeled it round for them to price it for me first.

Guys does this Air conditioner really work?
Do you have to fill it up with water?
How big is the external pipe that needs to be lead outside?
Can it work without the external pipe?

I already have a portable air conditioner unit, which is suppose to work with water.
It has done nothing for me, in summer my loft room is like an oven.
So I need somthing that will 100% guranteed work.

So far I was look for a fitted unit, and have been quoted prices all over £1000.

If these systems do work then I rather buy this as its £850 cheaper.

The thing you have sounds like an air cooler not an air conditioner !!

Air conditioners have to have the pipe going outside otherwise it will just put the heat straight back into the room, the pipe is the same as on a air conditioner about 4"

Im sure B+Q do a profecional split one for £350 which is the best type to go for as the noisy bit goes outside

Loft rooms get very hot and I very much doubt that the cheaper air con unit will be man enough to condition your room. You have been quoted for a split unit fitted and I guess it was for a 17k btu unit. The units talked about on here are very much less powerful than that.
Look out the quote you had and see what the btu was for the one they wanted to install, I bet it was a lot bigger than 7-9K btu.

Oh and the B&Q pro ones still need to be installed by a qualified fitter, they do some home fit split units that come pre gassed with check valves on the connecting pipework so they can be fitted by homeowners without the need for a fitter to come and gas it up once fitted. Still not cheap though.

Right the location where I want to put the Air conditioner indoor unit is around 125" away, How would I install it?

Here are some pics so you understand what I mean -
This pic shows the where the pipe will have to be drilled through, first that plaster board wall (above small door), then through it there is the loft wall.

This second picture shows where I will be fixing the indoor unit.

The 1 - 12 hour timer will be like the "sleep" timers you get on TVs - i.e. after 1 to 12 hours, the a/c will switch off. What would be nice on these portable a/c's is some sort of thermostatic control.

    ...Nick B

Portables can come with a thermostatic control. My a/c unit has one but it can be a pain too especially if you've fallen asleep and therefore oblivious to a certain extent to the heat only for the temp to change and the a/c unit kick in.

Not welcome when you've just managed to nod off. :-(
