exactly what i was thinking, if you leave your window open will it not negate the whole point of air con?
Also is the sound similar to one where you can hear the traffic if you leave your window open at night?0 -
1) Yep it wont take long for the room to heat back up again
2) You can vent the pipe through the wall it will come with an adaptor kit.0 -
Popped down to my local Homebase and got one.
Funny thing is that it was marked up at £139.99 (excl. 10% discount) rather than £149.99 which, with 10% gives the £135 quoted by the OP.
Got to the till and the price came up: £149.99 - 10% Discount (£15.00) = £134.99
Told them that was wrong (marked at £139.99) and they did a price check - which came back with "It's definitely £149.99, I priced them myself yesterday". In the end I was forced to take one of the staff members over to the Aircon units, show them and bring back the label.
After that they took 10 minutes trying to work out how to override the system but I did eventuall get it for £125.99.
Now all I have to do is get it upstairs!
Big thanks to the OP as my bedroom is far too hot for my baby (as it catches the sun all afternoon and heats up like an oven) and this will save me a lot of hassle.0 -
just fixed in the wall mounting kit so that I don't need the window or door left open. Working great now.
Learn from the mistakes of others - you won't live long enough to make them all yourself.0 -
betty boop - did you lay the unit down in the car when bringing the air con home. Like all fridge type devices, if you lay the unit down, you should wait 12 - 24hrs before use so that all the refriderant is in the right place.
(I assume that you selected the air con setting (not dry or fan) and that you reduced the temperature to around 17 or 18 so that the air con unit will actually start cooling (You can here when the compressor kicks in)

"1) Yep it wont take long for the room to heat back up again".
I presume the humidity will also climb again if you dehumidify the room first, then turn off the Air Con and close the window?
2) You can vent the pipe through the wall it will come with an adaptor kit.
Do you mean drill an external wall? :O0 -
Is it possible to buy a unit that fits into the loft space, and you can pipe the cool air into a pipe via the ceiling? or something like that?Sponsored by Tesco Clubcard Points !!0

I'd just like to add that I bought one of these last year so my pregnant wife didn't get too hot and we hardly had a hot day all summer (so I guess in a way it worked)...I think....0

Yes you have to vent through an external wall. Should not take more than a 30 minutes with a good hammer drill and the right drill bits. :T0 -
Just been out and bought one of the Homebase Aircon units. My opinion is -
Noise - you couldn't sleep with it on, but it would be OK in an office or living room. I intend to run it in the late evening in a bedroom to cool the room down and then turn it off.
Cooling effect - works fine. Good blast of cold air which was having a noticeable effect on the room. The jet of hot air coming out of the outlet vent was incredible.
Weight - the other stand alone units I have seen have been much heavier. This one I had no difficulty lifting it up the stairs.
Venting kit - functional. If I wanted to fix it permanently I would want something more weatherproof than the cover and fixing provided. As it is I will probably just hang it out the window.
Is it worth £135 - Absolutely.0
