generally speaking the pentium processors perform 20% faster, but cost 50-100% more.
IMHO the nearly £90 extra for the next model up doesn't justify the performance increase.
besides, pentiums and celerons can use the same socket, i'm sure P4 that will fit in the celeron machine will be on ebay long after they're obsolete, providing some type of upgrade path

The best Pentium 4 deal is this one at £410 well worth paying the extra

    Chip, i agree with you

your getting a massive 160gb hard drive big 17" screen...
but i think people are being blinded by this and dont actually realise that the processor without the Pentium4 is crap (sorry for being so blunt)

So please realise your paying for 17" screen and big hard drive

Its not a bad deal as far as it goes but your actually getting one of the lowest spec PC's on the market.

I would rather compromise and get a smaller screen and smaller hard drive (160 too big) and get a computer with a decent processer

I've bought loads of these Dell Systems for friends & family. They are perfectly adequate for 90% of day to day applications & perform better than expected. A system like this even a year ago would cost a fortune.
If you want super dooper graphics & sound, stick a couple of PCI cards in.

    I beg to differ

I challenge you to see a difference between a 2.6 Gig celeron and a 3.6 gig pentium4 in day to day applications,

heck, you wont see that great a difference between the two in games also

yes, if you have the money, spend more on the pentium 4,
if you havent tho, £328 is excellent price

........besides, its not trivial to upgrade hard drives (for most people) when it becomes full
and, the monitor is the thing you look at most often with your PC, so is the most important part

if you save over a year, a P4 chip to replace your celeron will cost peanuts and is a fairly simple swap

DONT be sucked in by the GHz game, that stopped mattering around the 2 GHz mark

matters if you are doing anything serious with latest software

you will need the extra Ghz for latest games with heavy AI, high definition videos (WMV-HD), video editing for home movies ...etc
