Hi Dee, Mum's op was cancelled in the autumn, so will be pleased if it goes ahead. I don't get to see her much, don't need to go at all, but good excuse to get over there. Harrogate/Northallerton Hull visit is really 'me' time, even with the driving, as I don't have to do meals etc etc (well, apart from organising here before I go!)

Shall take the laptop with me then I can sit and surf while mum and dad watch telly. Will do mum's pedicure for her which she enjoys, so a treat for her.

Hello :) Haven't caught up with thread yet so I hope everyone is well. Have been busy trying to get my avon stuff delivered and books in so not much has been done recently... dishwasher is still "poorly" I have ds1 off school at the moment with an unidentified rash... hopefully GP will let me send him back asap  but until we know what it is... ds2 can't go to preschool either......(!)

Made a yummy vegetable/lentil dish on sunday for tea - we had it with baked potatoes and was really filling. It was called "Winter savoury" and is a Rose Elliot recipe - I can post if anyone interested.

Does anyone know where I can get citric acid from?? Chemist told me to try Tesco and Tesco told me to try the chemist............(!) I want to make Lemon Cordial... I have everything I need except Citric Acid!!!

Yategirl I'm sure you used to be able to get citric acid in Boots. Maybe the larger shops still stock it. Worth a phone call maybe ?

I did try one Boots store... but it was an "out of town" one so may be the local one would be better... I'll give them ago! Thanks :)

Well DS1 is off school for the week.......  have got them crafting away at the mo... think mega baking will be needed... a) to keep them busy and b) to fill little tums.... think I will make rainbow buns later... the banana bread - 2 loaves - I made yesterday has all gone........!!!!!!!!!
  • Yategirl, i tried to find citric acid at a large boots store last christmas .. i wanted to make sweets for gifts. The told me it wasnt stocked anymore.

Another friend who used to buy it in for her students said she had to resort to buying it online as chemists had stopped stocking it around her too.

I dont know if i was having my leg pulled but i was told it could be used to make explosives hence was taken off stock!!!

Yategirl - i wouldn't mind that lentil veg recipe please!!!

re: citric acid - have you tried wilkos? i vaguely remember they had drink making equipment there, you know, beer, wine, etc., so they may have citric acid for that.

Yategirl any homebrew stockists will stock citric acid as it is used in the process. It usually comes in tablet form but you can get it in powder.

Well two walls tiled and I've managed to get the upstairs looking half decent!I even ordered some stuff off Amazon last night as they had some special offers on Dr Who toys and both my boys are avid fans.So when they come they'll be secreted away for birthday prezzies.I also sneaked on a french bread tin and some new measuring cups as one of mine has gone walkabouts.Well Chocolate bread and Raisin bread are both in the oven so thats the kids breakfast toast taken care of.Still got some more dough in BM to make plain bread.Need to do a decent bake but no chance of that with hubby off work and doing DIY

mmhhh... don't think we have a homebrew store here... the only wilkinsons is a trek away.... I do want to get some seeds though......guess I could go online... would save me "dragging" the kids!!!

    ok recipe:

    Vegetarian Winter Savoury (Rose Elliot)

    serves 4

    1 oz marg/butter or 30ml oil
    1 large onion chopped
    3 celery sticks chopped
    3 medium carrots chopped
    2 oz mushrooms chopped
    15 oz can tomatoes chopped
    vegetable stock
    2 oz lentils
    1 tsp yeast extract
    1 tsp dried mixed herbs
    seasoning
    3 oz cheddar cheese melted

soften onion, celery, carrots and mushrooms and gently fry for 10mins, stir from time to time.
meanwhile, drain the juice from the tomatoes into a jug and make up the liquid with stock to 300ml. Add this liquid to the veg mix and bring to the boil.
Add the lentils, cover and simmer for 20 mins, then add the tomatoes, yeast extract, herbs and season to taste.
Transfer to a large gratin dish, cover with grated cheese and place under a hot grill until the cheese is bubbling and golden brown.

Best served with jacket potatoes or pasta.

this served 2 adults and 2 children with large jacket potatoes each (dh had seconds!). there was a portion left over and I had this for my lunch yesterday on it's own.
