The OP doesn't give their age - but apparently for pensioners falls in the home are the predominant cause of hospital admissions, and so bathrooms in particular should be equipped with plenty of grab-handles and mats in the bath/shower (or some other grippy thing to stand on).

My dad is unsteady on his feet and was advised to always wear proper shoes in the house (e.g. trainers) rather than loose slippers, and they have also fitted a second bannister so he can hold on with both hands when using the stairs.

I'm sorry to sound harsh but this sounds like its a small quarrel between you and your boyfriend. Sort it out between you, it's just a bath mat in the grand scheme

If he often refuses to compromise and the list of it happening is endless , then get out of that relationship .
  • It's amazing that we were ever able to resolve shower mat dilemmas before the internet...
  • How many people would even mention to their partner that they "almost" fell in the shower, much less ask them if they could get a shower mat?

Breaking up a relationship over a shower mat? Woman, grow a pair and buy your own - he doesn't have to use it.
  • Yesterday while getting into shower i slipped and almost fell, hurting my elbows on the tiles behind as I steadied myself. I was a little shaken as I couldn't help thinking I could have easily fallen fully and hurt my neck/back/head and seriously injured myself.

Unless you have mobility issues, I don't think that's very likely. Are you usually given to over-stating things?

That said, if (like me) you're not quite awake in the mornings and a mat would make you feel a bit safer, just get one.

Young and fit people can and do seriously injure themselves and even die from simple falls. All it takes is a bad landing or something hard in the way of your head or neck.

It COULD happen, but then a lot of things COULD happen. Not terribly likely is the point I was trying to make. 60 million people a day taking a shower in this country, and probably no more than a handful of them sustaining any kind of injury from doing so!

OP hasn't given any detail about their age or mobility, so I'm assuming they're reasonably fit and able.
