Oh forgot to add School have invited us to a Mother's day lunch but it's £4 (so will be £12) if I go to all the small's :o I'm tempted to just say I can't make that day :o

I really don't think they think about how much it adds up. Especially those with more than one child attending.

Do they have them on different days? If so it feels like a total con and I would simply tell them that you can't afford £12 for three lunches.... might give them food for thought for future events and make them realise that not everyone has money to throw away. If they're on the same day surely you wouldn't be expected to pay 3 times for 1 lunch.
I know the schools are short of money and trying to improve their finances but it sounds as though it is being taken to extremes.XX

  • My kids old school used to do a 'come dine with me' lunch for the parents to go in and eat with the kids. I had two at the school at the time and I used to say that I could only make one of the days so could I sit with both kids on that day and then only pay once!

They are on different days for different years. I guess it makes sense than trying to fit everyone's parent in. Beanie while a mother's day lunch I think any 'guardian' can attend. Quite a few have other relatives going.

I've told DD and DS we will do a special dinner at home and they seem quite okay with it. If they really wanted me to go I would of course. But £12 is nearly half our weekly food budget

Chrystal their school seems to ask for money every single week since it changed from council to an academy. Wouldn't mind if it had improved in other areas!

I really don't think they think about how much it adds up. Especially those with more than one child attending.

I'm sure they don't! I had this conversation with a teacher friend who was extolling the quality of the schools meals locally and what good value they were. I pointed out that I have three kids so if I sent them all for school dinners then half of my weekly budget for five people would be spent on just lunches for three. Put another way, out of 21 meals a week, five (under a quarter) would use 50% of the budget.

5 week month it isn't pretty average here. It's a really rough area too :o

I think in some ways school meals are a lot more reasonable than high school. As at least it does include a drink and pudding. But I can't afford it for 3 of them :o
