  • You probably work for Trustpilot and have tweaked the figures to gives Argos better scores.

Brexit Fan, you say that Argos have dreadful reviews on Trustpilot but they have 70% "excellent" scores.
Other high street and online retailers:

    John Lewis. 21% excellent.
    Currys PC world. 17% excellent.
    Tesco. 30% excellent.
    Sainsbury. 23% excellent.
    Debenhams. 13% excellent
    Morrisons. 46% excellent.
    M&S. 24% excellent.
    Amazon.co.uk. 60% excellent.
    Homebase. 33% excellent.

In fact, the only chain store I could find with better scores than Argos was Richer sounds (at 85%) so tell me, if you are going to Boycott Argos because of their "dreadful" score, are you also going to apply the boycott to every retailer with lower scores?

No I won't boycott any of those retailers because I have never had a problem with them. I did several years ago have a problem with John Lewis when a freezer I ordered went AWOL. John Lewis were fantastic in the way the dealt with it, I got daily updates from them plus a discount that I never asked for, and as a result I have happily used them since.

My main gripe with Argos is the way they let people believe you can a return an item up to 30 days later. Until a while back, that actually was the case. Many people are not aware their policy has changed and get stung when they try to return a used item.

I get it that you and others love Argos - I quite liked them myself until around 6 months ago. We are not going to agree but if this thread does just one thing, I hope it makes a few more people aware of what exactly their 30 day guarantee really means.

When was this so called change? Don't think I've ever been aware you could return a used product under their satisfaction guarantee.
  • I had a very similar experience to the OP.

I purchased a Samsung smart TV from them last year. Like yours, it didn’t have any of the mainstream apps other than iplayer and when you tried to use them they often froze and you would have to power cycle the TV!

I complained to Argos who weren’t interested. I do feel that it’s very misleading calling it a smart tv when it doesn’t even have ITV and Channel 4 players. In the end I elected to get a Roku which I’m very happy with.

My experience with smart tv’s is that their slow and unreliable anyway. It’s much cheaper to just get a standard tv and a smart device which you can download apps with.

I still use Argos but only if I know exactly what I want and research has already been done etc.

How exactly do they "let people believe you can a return an item up to 30 days later"?
Let me think. To let people know their actual policy, why don't they show this their website, in the catalogue and in store.
Oh, I forgot. This is exactly what they do.

I don't "love" Argos any more than I "love" John Lewis, Tesco or Waitrose but I do like their 30 day returns policy for unwanted (and unused) purchases and judging from their very good feedback compared to most other retailers on Trustpilot, I'm far from alone in this.

If other people were to take responsibility for their actions and actually read what they were agreeing to before proceeding then there wouldn't be any need for forums such as this to advise people of what to expect.

Post 5 of this thread in reply to the OP, POPPYOSCAR said "I thought Argos have a 30 day money back guarantee?"

That is the problem. That is what people beleive. And that's from a poster who has been on here for years and has posted over 10,000 times!

Years ago you could return just about any item to Argos for just about any reason, it used to be within 16 days.

People are simply not aware that their now so called 30 day guarantee is completely different, and basically means you can't return anything once it's been used unless it's faulty.

Yes I agree, we should look beyond the headline, we should read the small print, we should do our research etc but in the real world people live busy lives and still think, "I know, I'll buy it from Argos, I can always return it if it's not what I want."

In reply to your point above, how about a great big message in every store, on the website and in the catalogue stating "NO USED ITEMS CAN BE RETURNED UNDER OUR 30 DAY RULE UNLESS FAULTY"

Maybe Argos (and other retailers) should remove all their returns policies that go above and beyond your statutory rights? Then we wouldn't have this problem at all. That would solve your gripe about people having to read different returns policies in a stroke. Just 1 piece of legislation reading would be required and that would cover every retailer in the country.

A country of Sports Direct-esqe retailers..........

That's a good idea, but replace the word "faulty" with "it does not conform to contract".

But do we then need another line defining "does not conform to contract"?
However, that could be is a somewhat smaller font - we'll call it "small print".

But wait... that wouldn't work because we all know people in the real world live busy lives and don't read small print.

I wish Argos would remove it. It's worthless anyway. At least people then would no longer be duped into thinking they can return items anymore.
