I dont have any hairspray. might have to get a cheap one for any future emergencies!! :rotfl: What other uses does it have?
    Immobilising spiders :D

Other useful things - I use soapnuts for cool washes, vinegar and soda crystals to clean the WM and DW, vinegar as a fabric softener for hot washes (where I use ecover washing powder), borax as a stain remover, bicarb and vinegar to clean the oven.

I'm sure there used to be a thread called "double duty" or something like that, it had alternative uses for common items.

    Edit: Found it!

My best money saving tip for the house would be don't have an OH or kids, you'll save a fortune! :rotfl:

thanks. i will have a look at that later! :D

I agree - i spend all my time clearing up after dh and kids. dh will leave a trail of litter wherever he sits, and cups and plates. he wont put anything in the dishwasher and no matter how little is in a cupboard, it will all fall out when he opens it!!! :rotfl:

I don't use hairspray for it's intended purpose, never have! Always have a can on the go for emergencies though. It also removes graffiti!

The gloop - definitely that laundry gloop - instead of detergent. VERY cheap indeed - and works well.
  • my biggest money saver has been getting rid of the tumble drier and not have a bath plu so i'm not tempted to have a bath - i just have two showers a week. I also don't have the heating on timer, i don't come home at regular times - another thing that's saved me money is getting a small TV for me bedroom - i watch in bed, with just the bedside light on low energy light bulb with electric blanket for heating and no heating on (that got me through the winter) I also cook in bulk and only shop monthly

buy what you need, not what you fancy. I always have a small list by my kettle in the kitchen and only buy whats on the list.I also cut back on spending by only haveing a set amount as we did back in the 1960s when if what was in your purse in cash had to get you through the week then you became a lot more inventive with what you had and by golly you managed to get through the week on it. I have just had a weeks holiday on what I have saved by doing this since last Sepember.I have a set amount per week, and once its gone then its gone till the following week but so far I have ended up with money left over as I'm no longer just wandering around the shops bunging stuff in the trolley without thinking. I also listed on the outside of the freezer and on the insides of my cupboards what I had in store and 'shopped' from my stores a bit more .After all I bought it originally to eat, not to look at in the cupboards.
I am far more aware of what I am buying now than I used to be.
I have quite a bit left over at the moment from my April food purse as I still havn't been shopping yet although I came home on Friday ,but I am going to see how many more NSDs(no spend days) I can get in this week before actually going to the shops.I brought stuff back from my hols so I have a bit to keep me going this week.

Really? that's fantastic, I've spent ages scrubbing with stardrops / baking soda recently and not getting anywhere.

Soapnuts is a fav of mine, but the biggest financial difference has been shopping at asda, and shopping around for the deals on electric etc.

definately white vinegar and bicarb, also putting flat coke down the loo to clean it. Old lemons stored in the freezer and then laid on the stubborn chalky patch under the tap is fab.

I really need to look up alternative to washing powder and fabric conditioner as they are expensive. If I can save there and be eco friendly it would be great.

Personally I break dishwasher tabs in half too, probably the best tip ive had from here.
  • Home-made laundry gloop and vinegar in the fabric conditioner dispenser. I made 10 litres of gloop, enough to last me six months at least, for about £2 max.
