I totally understand - my checked case weighed 30kg and hand luggage 7 kg on the dot.

It is weird with them paying - but it is something I need to adjust to.

As a parent of adult children, the most wonderful feeling in the world is when they are all home and in bed asleep.... it just feels like bliss (although normally there are a few GF in the house as well).

    :D:D:D:D:D

I long ago get into the habit of taking the phone and the ipad to bed with me in readiness for any middle of the night crisis.

Yes it is very nice when they are all home and you know exactly where everyone is, you want to hold your breath and freeze the moment in time - sadly only happens a few days a year now.
I've had to stop myself doing a headcount in the morning as I never know where any of them are now - Eldest child could be London, Sheffield, York or Bristol or elsewhere or just working from home, S-I-l could be working anywhere in London, Eldest son could be on base but he is often on courses and training exercises just about anywhere in the country and his GF flies in and out of the US, Germany, all over the places for work and fun ... I can never keep up with all of the comings and goings ...

Errant son will be okay - but it does seem a flipping long process to get his wife here. DS1 and his new wife are arriving next week and will do the spouse process in the UK, but they are also applying for DS1 to go to Singapore to live/work, which resulted in us having to send his certificates over urgently at a cost of £60 for an interview on Monday with Singapore immigration - I think that they are much more efficient that the Home Office - I think that it is going to be very expensive time for us as parents but at least he will be in the UK for a while which will be lovely. :D:D:D:D:D

At the end of 2016 when he was working in Kent, if he hadn't messed it up for himself (being brutally honest) and if he had got through his probationary period and been taken on a permanent contract then he would have had a small payrise. Then he would have been earning sufficient to start the process - he would just have had to wait to get the 6 months salary slips and then started the paperwork in the autumn of 2016 - that would also have given him time to save enough for deposits and bonds so he could get a flat and rented it out in his own name so that would have satisfied the other criteria - having a place in his own name. So even allowing for the slowness of the home office it might have all been completed by early 2018.

Instead he lost his job and he came home. I think he was hoping that between the 2 jobs earlier this year that would have been acceptable level of income but then he lost the main job so that was the end of that plan.

But things happen for a reason. Going into the army might be the making of him, once he gets through his training and the salary improves and he will have all of the support network that the army provides so even though its going to set things back another 18 months it might be the best method of going about things

I can certainly empathise with you on that...all adult children home and in bed is such a wonderful feeling. :D:D

I think your right about things happening for a reason, and there is a positive with the length of time it has taken as it must have tested their relationship and your patience to the limit.

DS1 has ended his employment, so will need to find a new job in the UK which is harder said than done. He keeps getting offers but anything that he fancies is out of the UK. I've told him he may need to take a few steps down the ladder - he is not happy with my view. But it is supposed to be easier to get into the UK than Singapore, and they can live in the UK on one wage but will need two wages in Singapore. They are moving into a house OH built, so that bit is sorted. They meet a savings criteria, which is good. She also had permanent residency in the UK when she was a child, so this gives a different route for them to apply for as well as spouse (it is also significantly cheaper option with more rights than a spouse).

I may go grey by the end of it all. :(:(:(:(:( I am amazed that you haven't already!

It is the best nights sleep ever.

DS1 has lived out of the UK for so long I have lost count (I think he has lived in 12 countries)- but he is coming back soon - just hope they settle in the UK (he tends to have very itchy feet).

Just catching up before I fall asleep:o:rotfl:

For mhoc and SSM. Getting into this country isn't easy at all.....it can be a nightmare even booking a fortnight's holiday here. I would employ a solicitor to oversee the process as it's so important to get the details right. Get it wrong and the application can be refused, then refused again on appeal and before you know it you've mucked up your chances for years to come:o:(

is it legal for her to work in the UK - It does not solve the problem but at least if one of them is working it stops them eating into the savings if he cant find work at the level he wants very quickly.
Are their names on all of the bills and are they paying rent?

    Its vastly complicated isnt ...
