Smart Meters

  • Had a smart meter installed 2 weeks ago. Council home had prepayment meters installed when i moved in. Grudged paying for them to be removed so left them in. The electricity under the smart meter stayed on top up, but the gas went to monthly bills. I wasnt told this would happen, im now used to ( after 6 years of being in property) topping up and having what i pay for so monthly bills werent wanted. With the big increase coming and  estimated bills i didnt want to be overcharged. Phoned up and was told it would take 5 days to swap gas meter to top up. After a week i phoned back and im now told it takes upto 91 days to communicate. Apparently it is installed but not commisioned. My electricity communication works but gas doesnt? I feel im being led along so the company can estimate my gas bill over the winter and charge more than i will use.
    It really is time that Ofgem started to fine installers for not commissioning the gas meter. This is the last item in installation process. Once started, the process has 59 minutes to complete. If the DCC network is busy then,  after 59 minutes, the commissioning process stops and it has to be re-initiated. By this time, the installer is well into his/her next installation.

    When this happened to me, I contacted my supplier and they talked me through the commissioning process once they had taken all the required actions at their end. If I recall, it was just three button presses and commissioning took about 10 minutes.

    i had the same problem. My gas meter had a msg "commissioning complete?". I just guessed that they had not finished and just kept pressing ok till a meter reading appeared....not good.
    that was octopus.
    they also condemned the gas boiler flue incorrectly stating that the flue should have been 150mm from the guttering, yet the boiler spec states 25mm as a minimum...
    if, instead of looking for problems that don't exist, had concenctared properly on the install, I would not have had to do their job
  • I was with Eon and they installed smets 1 meters i then went to BG for a cheaper deal at the end of 2021 but my meters stopped working, i contacted BG and they said they would have to do a software upgrade, i waited and nothing happened i contacted them again and they said they would have to replace the meters but there was a year waiting list, i went through the complaints procedure up to the ombudsman who said that bg had misled me and awarded me £50, so i contacted them and they told me they would register my interest and there was a year waiting list, it was a bit more complicated than that this is the shortened version. Why do they keep advertising them?
  • I've just had smet2 meters installed 14 days ago and the gas meter is not showing data on the IHD or sending data to EDF. I've been told it won't commission and the problem is at the DCC end, and their is no timescale for a fix. They have until 2025 to sort this out! This is appalling. Who gave this to Capita plc?

    So much for this
    'Smart metering brings immediate benefits to consumers, helping them to take control of their energy usage, and is a key enabler for the transition to a more flexible energy market and the delivery of net zero emissions by 2050. It give consumers near real time information on energy use – expressed in pounds and pence – so they can better manage their energy use, save money and reduce emissions.'
  • No technology is perfect. Not sure why some people think it should be.

    I had a similar issue. It was sorted-out eventually 🤷‍♂️

    I still have no IHD though. But it doesn't bother me that much. I use what I use and that's it.

    Contact your supplier and advise them that it is in breach of the Smart Meter Installation Code of Practice (SMICOP) and if the issue is not fixed within a week you will be raising a formal complaint and reporting EDF to Ofgem for a breach of Licence Conditions.

    My daughter had her SMETS2 meters installed 4 weeks ago. There was an issue with commissioning the gas meter. This was resolved by Octopus who carried out remote commissioning of the meter.

    If EDF has an issue then the problem sits within its own systems not the DCC. If the latter was the case there would be widespread reports of problems.

    You can access SMICOP on the EDF website. The relevant section is:

    5. FAULT RESOLUTION 5.1.Procedures for Handling Faults

    It is each Member’s responsibility to ensure that;

    5.1.1.If a fault is identified with the Smart Metering System during the Installation Visit, the Customer is made aware of the problem, what the resolution is likely to be, who will be resolving the fault, and the approximate timescales of the resolution;

    5.1.2.The Customer is provided with contact details for additional information related to the Smart Metering System fault, for example should they wish to check progress;

    5.1.3.It is made clear to the Customer that they will not be charged for rectifying the Smart Metering System fault;

    5.1.4.Information is provided as to who the Customer is to contact if they identify a fault with the Smart Metering System;

    5.1.5.If the IHD, if provided, is found to be faulty within 12 months of Installation, the IHD is either repaired or replaced17; and

    5.1.6.The Customer is informed about their rights in relation to components of the Smart Metering System that are identified to be faulty.
  • Just (2 days ago) had a smart meter installed. Electricity only supplier is EDF Economy 7. The smart meter (EDMI) has Rate 1 (day), Rate 2 (night) and Total displays.
    IHD (Chameleon type 1) only shows the Total consumption and cost. Is this normal or should it have Rate 1 (day) & Rate 2 (night) figures?
    Info from others with smart meter and Economy 7 would be very welcome

    Forget the IHD toy, just read the meter on the wall.  Above all, make sure that the registers are not transposed on the bill: there is no agreed standard about whether the Day Rate is R1 or R2.
    Switch on a high power load such as a kettle or tumble dryer in the middle of the day and see which register increments.  Make sure it's the same one that's shown on the bill against the Day Rate usage.

    The IHD meter index is the sum  (the TOTAL) of all the 4 registers that have been used since the meter was installed. There is no industry convention as to which meter register is used for peak or offpeak: my meter records offpeak on the R1 register. IMHO, suppliers should stop using the terms Day and Night.

    If the correct tariff has been sent to your meters ( you can check this in the meter TOU matrix) and you look at the tariff matrix at 2am you will see that the display has changed from the peak to the offpeak tariff rate.

    IHDs are not used for billing.It is not for IHDs to show total consumption and total cost. You have to manually set the budget.

    Download the free App BRIGHT and you will get the cost information that you are seeking.

    Not if you live the the South East region where E7 reverts to peak rate between 0030 - 0230 GMT !
