Halfords Autocentre Ceased my Engine

You can go to court, absolutely.
Will you win? Probably not. Because Halfords will produce their report that says it wasn't the plugs, and that even if the plugs had been wrong, it'd have not lasted three weeks before spitting the dummy. The Nissan "report" is so poor as to be pretty useless.
Even if you do win, it's unlikely you'll get anything more than the cost of the plug change refunded.
As Halfords did not fix the problem with the over heating engine, and charged £500, I think they should/may return the £500, at the very least.
Nissan should help too, if Halfords can be got off the hook.0 -
Halfords would not have bought plugs from ECP.
Having briefly worked as a mechanic at Halfords years ago, yes they would. They buy from local trade suppliers including the likes of ECP and Andrew Page. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

Can I go to claims court with this. I have already spent a lot of money and my car is gone. Just wanted advice as to if it makes sense to go to claims court.
If you take this to court this is what Halfords will be asking. Without a viable explanation you are wasting your time.0 -
Hi think you need to be asking halfords why they changed those parts? If it was to fix the overheating, then are they liable since they failed.0

So you took it to Halfords for overheating and they changed the plugs which has no relevence to it overheating. If they fitted wrong plugs it would become immediately obvious on start up. Secondly have Nissan removed the head or used a borescope to inspect the pistons vlaves etc? Sounds to me as the overheating issue was still there and as Nissan say the bolt snapped which to me sounds as if the top of the engine stopped dead and bottom kept going either way the engines shot and Halfords are blameless for the engine falling to bits but id certainly ask what a set of plugs has to due with it overheating. Sounds more like it had a misfire due to head gasket from the overheating0

Quite possibly halfords suggested changing the plugs as they were massively overdue, and the OP agreed. (The car was down on power at low speed remember, and it had a coil too- coilpacks usually fail when the plugs are well overdue, but I bet the diagnostic was showing a cylinder missfire)
Often when an engine is misbehaving the first advice is to service it if it is past a service limit, and no-one ever changes the plugs on a Nissan at a regular service as the engine has to come apart with new gaskets.I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

The inlet manifold curves over the top of the engine and has to come off, along with the throttle body .I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

Thanks everyone for all the messages and suggestions.
I will go back to Nissan and ask for more details and rational on why they thing Spark Plug is the problem and take it to Dispute resolution and see what happens.0 -
the failure is due to your timing slipping (broken stud on adjuster) , nissan are stating wrong plugs because they are not nissan branded plugsSave a Rachael
