Having just faced a similar dilemma recently....

Several changes of type of saucepan later over the years - my saucepans are now all stainless steel and deliberately NOT non-stick ones.

The basic saucepans come from Woolworths actually and have been fine (errr...Woolies has now gone of course).

I have just bought 2 frying pans - the standard size one was a Le Creuset one in the end (lifetime guarantee :D) and the omelette pan was a Habitat one (think it might be the Triplo range?? - its NOT a non-stick one anyway).

Think I should be set up for life now:D

I do find eventually non-stick does wear out, despite following all the rules, but the plain stainless steel ones carry on for ever, as long as you get good quality ones with solid handles.

I'll second that. I bought some really good stainless steel pans thirty years ago and they're still going strong. The non-stick ones bit the dust years ago and I've never found it necessary to replace them.

It may depend on what heat source you cook on, though. I have an Aga, which is a very even heat and things don't stick much on that. If you're cooking on gas it may be a different story.

I would not advise putting aluminium pans - even if they're anodised - in the dishwasher. Stainless steel ones are fine unless they've got plastic handles, in which case the handles may crack up eventually.
If we are supposed to be thin, why does chocolate exist?

Like ceridwen I won't have non-stick pans (toxic at high temperature - the fumes kill birds instantly, and as it wears off where does it go? - into your stomach). I also bought a set of cheap Woolies pans years ago. I've got two of them still (I burnt the bottom off one of them once!). I've got a few other stainless steel pans, but need another large one - I bought a Judge chip pan a few months ago as it was a good size and on offer (don't use it for chips though!) and if I see them on offer again I might buy another.

    Hi Treacle,

As your thread has dropped down the Old Style board I've added it to the existing thread on buying saucepans so that you can see everyone's recommendations.

I have an Aga too. Have SS pans bought from John Lewis at a very reasonable price. They have SS handles too, so they can go in the oven (as they should!)

  • I am looking to replace our saucepans- the ones we bought 5 yrs ago are still fine but were non-stick Tefal ones and the coating is wearing off on some of them (despite not using metal utensils)

I am thinking it will be more money saving to invest in some really good ones to last a lifetime as it were, and that way I can save up and buy one at a time as well rather than splash out all at once!

I like the appearance of Le Creuset but they are way too heavy for me, even when empty!

Does anyone have any recommendations for someone who cooks extensively everyday?

    Thanks!

Invest in a set of circulon ones, i've had various sets of pans over the years but these are by far the best, they take no effort to clean (even scrambled egg just wipes off).

    Hi attentionseeker,

This thread has lots of recommendations that may help:

    which saucepans to buy?

I'll add your thread to that one later to keep the suggestions together.

We bought some John Lewis stainless steel ones about 4 years ago...they are fab, cost a bob or two mind, but they will last us forever!
