You authorise the payments when you use your card.
The bank processes your promise to pay the retailer.

Did you not check your balance before spending more than you had?

Not unless they were applied incorrectly by the Bank. Historical bank charges are not recoverable.

If you are currently in the Bank's definition of financial hardship, you can plead your case and the Bank MAY choose to refund some charges-typically the last six months. Note that any refund is a goodwill gesture by the bank, they are not obliged to refund anything.

Yes banks will allow you to go over your credit limit and then debit your account with the overlimit charges. This is a very important revenue stream for the banks and since the
Banks won in the Supreme Court carte blanche prevails.

Despite very complex computer systems its in the interest of the banks to continue this practice and earn millions every week in the UK.

No doubt the usual bank defenders on this site will be replying shortly with the usual
biased comments. Let the fun begin.

Firstly, do you have an arranged overdraft? If you do and you went into it, that's your own fault.

If you don't have an arranged overdraft....you should be aware of how much money you have and what you are spending. If you chose to spend more money than you had, that's your own mistake.

Regardless, you can only claim back charges applied in error which these don't appear to be. The banks do have to consider it when you're CURRENTLY in financial difficulty but that's not a guarantee.
