The Chase cashback is only for debit card payments, not direct debits.
Yes indeed I wrote the wrong thing. I've tried it with Paypal debit card payments as well and they don't pay out the 1% cash back on that either.
There are exclusions on Chase cashback, so it would depend what the PayPal spend was actually for (and this may not have tracked via PayPal).

For TSB debit card payments, doing this via PayPal is IMO only likely to complicate things, for little benefit (unless the merchant supports PayPal but not debit cards).

I will be topping up Amazon gift card balance, and possibly transferring money to Revolut.

    6. make at least 5 debit card payments per month (excluding cash withdrawals and bill payments made in a TSB branch)

The question whether I have personally done that, yes I have done that and completed the mission for this month. I
What worries me is that the Paypal direct debits , although they show as DDs on the TSB account, may not count for the deal. For example, I have a Chase account and although Paypal DDs show as DDs on the account they don't count for the 1% cashback I should get. And I don't imagine TSB tell you you've met that month's spending tasks to get the £50 or £5, or do they?
That is because DD and Debitcard Payment are two different things.
With Paypal you could do both things.
    - Debitcard Payment is you link you PayPal account with your Debitcard (e.g  16 digit card number and other info of debitcard). Every time you want to use it just select that debitcard.
    - Payment by DDs you link you PayPal account with your current account (e.g sort code and AC number). But pulling money by DD from your ac to PayPal will need to be done manually every month on PP app, can not be done using online banking.
Chase  will only pay 1% cashback if you pay by Debitcard (not DD payment).  I also get Chase 1% by linking my debitcard with paypal ac. Also getting cashback when doing shopping using physical card.

In PayPal, when you try to add money manually from a linked bank account, why does it fail?

You're not giving anyone much to go on there. In what way does it fail?

In the app it just states "We're sorry something has gone wrong. We're not able to complete the transaction". It's inconsistent though because if I try the next day from the same bank account it may work.

Is the app the only way to manually add money from a bank account?  When I try to do it on the website it states you have to do a transfer from the bank account.

You can not do that online, you will need to use their app.

Anyone got any ideas for the cheapest item available at common shops and supermarkets? I found a Swizzels Mega Drumstick for 35p in Sainsburys. There has to be cheaper individual sweets or the like around somewhere.

Actually I just thought of a cheaper individual item. Loose onions are 65p a kilo which makes one onion about 10p! So that'll be 5 individual onions bought on my TSB card each month lol!

You can buy 1p stamps at my local post office. Failing that you could buy a 10p amazon gift card online.
