There is a distinct possibility that Samsung/ Networks will enable 4G Calling (VoLTE) and Wifi calling via generic Samsung firmware eventually.

There must be some kind of standard profile that works for iPhones.

Hopefully, then networks can move away from having to install their own custom firmware.

Anyone on O2 who has relied on their Tu Go app for Wifi Calling had better check their phone against O2's list of compatible WiFi phones. They are killing off Tu Go at the end of November, and will 'support' WiFi calling after that..........as long as you have the latest, greatest phone.

My Wife and I both just bought Samsung A3 2017's after talking to their chat team, with specific mention of the ability to use wifi for calling. They assured us that there would be no issues. Both of us then transferred from Tesco. My Wife's went through ok, the Tu app works ok.

Mine didn't go OK. The Tu app worked to start with, but I was still receiving text message on my old phone, which basically meant that my phone was acting as a VoIP phone with the Tu app ok, but as a cell phone it didn't work - it hadn't been transferred correctly.

After using the chat system again, it transferred correctly, but now the Tu app does not work (it is stuck in a verifying procedure). I was told via the chat system that if I updated the phone, wifi calling would be enabled.

    I did so.

Wifi calling is enabled in my o2 account, but there is no option on my phone to use it.

Back to the chat system. 'The A3 doesnt support WiFi calling'

Yes it does - other networks use it.

Ok, (after nearly 20 minutes waiting), the A3 supports it, but O2 doesn't support the A3 WiFi calling.

    Checking their website, it supports:

    iPhone X, iPhone 8 Plus, 8, 7 Plus, 7, 6s Plus, 6s, 6 Plus, 6,

    SE Samsung Galaxy S8, S8 Plus, Note8, S7, S7 edge

Sony Xperia XZ Premium, Xperia XZ1, Xperia XZ1 Compact

otherwise folks, you are, like my wife and I, utterly screwed.

A more accurate headline would be, o2 are killing the TuGo app in favour of actual WiFiCalling.

There is already a thread running about the issue.

Ordinarily I would agree, and would have worded the title differently.

But when a company wipes out the ability to use WiFi for everyone except those who have purchased the most expensive, latest phones, with a choice of less than 2 dozen from a long list of phones they actually supply, I cannot see how anyone could think of it as anything other than killing WiFi calling for the majority.

There are many phones capable of Wifi Calling. The A3 I bought is one. There is no reason at all for O2 to not support this unless they choose otherwise. Samsung have the function supported, Android has it supported, so where is the weak link?

Considering O2's position in the market, with such a long history, they have zero excuse for not being the first to support WiFi calling, let alone not being able to support phones which are designed for it.
  • so, good news !

after my official complaint was finally responded to, O2 have allowed me to leave my contract 6 months early with no charge and have given me a "fee free" PAC code so I can transfer my number elsewhere

While all you say is correct it doesn’t fix the fact your title is patently wrong. O2 are not killing WiFiCalling, just an app that allows some phones to make calls over WiFi...

I have just received my complaint response.
    Same as the above.
Been with O2 / Cellnet since mobile phones were like house bricks.
Oh well time to move to Three then.

I had a text from the complaints team saying they are going to contact me today. Hopefully get a similar response as you two.
  • Just received my call. I was given two options, first one was to replace my Galaxy S8 with one that has the O2 firmware installed. The second option was to have an O2 signal booster sent out to my free of charge.

Jumped at the signal booster option, so all in all, very happy :)
