Thanks for further information custardy. No employer these days as now retired, but thanks for update.

    Just got back to this.

If I purchase a programme for Office 2016 From Amazon, do I uninstall my current copy of Office 2007 first?

Will back up my files first obviously.

If you download one of these keys, how do you get the actual software?

From Microsoft. You download a small loader program which in turn downloads and installs the software.

I guess you overlooked post #47 then. ;)
  • I prefer download the whole ISO of the installation files then burn to DVD and write on with a Sharpie what it is. :D

Then it will be good for years to come. Loader programs will expire and be obsolete when Microsoft wants.

In fairness though, its documented as and when the software is out of support and its usually at that point when the small loader programs stop working. The same thing happened with the Live Essentials program as the smaller installer now doesn't work as it can't find the download files.

The same will happen with the single-use versions of Office. Yes it might be yours for life but the ISOs aren't particularly easy to find and its far easier for Joe Public to go to a website, bash a key in and install the software that way. When that route stops working, you've got an cardboard doorstop. The subscription model on the other hand, well it pretty much guarantees you'd be able to get your program back, at least until Microsoft goes out of business... Unlikely considering their latest revenue figure is $90 billion...

Or until you stop paying your subscription then at that point you will no longer be able to download the software files whether they are available or not.

A company doesn't have to go bust to stop providing a service or product as per your Live Essentials example. Also on that subject, luckily I have the "wle_all.exe" file which contains all the Live Essentials programs without having to download during installation. Handy for installing Windows Movie Maker on refreshed PCs.

Just because a program is no longer supported e.g. updates no longer released, doesn't stop that program from still being useful. :)

Actually in the case of Office subscription there is nothing to stop you downloading. You just won't be able to activate it.

    Same thing. Can't use it.

Out of interest, if you leave their employment, are you expected to uninstall it?

Yes you are but no one would ever know and MS never bother checking it would cost to much money for them to check.

    Thanks for the tip people.

I have bought my dad Office 2016 for Christmas from Amazon (cost me £10) and it works perfectly.

Got myself a copy for £10 through a Home Use Program , and again it works perfectly !.
