Yes. Poundland isn't going to have a can of Kestrel lager unsold.

Fast forward to Remainer Towers Old Peoples Home 2050.

Note the tired dusty EU flag bunting (the EU was dissolved in 2025 by vote of the European Parliament where the AFE (Alternative for Europe) voted to change the name to the Greater Germania Reich).

After lunch the oldsters are given cans of Kestrel from Euroland to provide a chemical cosh, helpfully the nice lady that comes on a Tuesday to run activities has them all kniting EU flag holders to put the cans in..............

Making Brexit political has huge ramifications. Barnier doesn't appear to care about the consequences. Giving an even deeper insight into the inner cores mindset.

It is somewhat ironic for Foster to have a pop at Barnier for the EU not being an honest broker, given the situation in NI at present where the UK government certainly is not an "honest broker" as it is utterly dependant on DUP votes to survive. Some might say that is a rather more pressing concern for NI than the EU pointing out that the current UK redlines can't be squared with an open border.

The accusation from Arlene Foster that Barnier and the EU commission don't understand Unionism has real resonance in my view. It would be unwise for Barnier to blithely support the Irish position under the guise of the EU27 solidarity and not take into account the ramifications if the Unionist community become unhappy. The comments from Barnier today clearly indicate that the EU commission feels that the Irish border question is the UK's achilles heel and perhaps a vehicle to put the UK under pressure.
A high risk strategy in my view.

Rewind back almost 2 years. Mrs May did say be prepared for a hard Brexit. Seems as if she may have made the right call.

The mantra is 'they need us more than we need them'.

Taking the EU's own latest published data for 2015. The trade deficit is somewhere in the region of £100 billion. Import duties will hurt them badly.

If we introduce tariffs, who do you think will pay them?

If we buy less stuff from the EU, do you think the cost of it will go up or down?

The thing about tariffs is that they are disproportionate. They would affect some EU states more than others.

I did read about places like Argentina keen to sell us more fruit & veg.

I suspect Spanish & French veg producers would be pretty keen to ensure continued access to a profitable market. Their farmers have always been quite powerful when it comes to lobbying their government.

If we had a no deal / tariff situation, I wonder how long it would be before there was call on both sides for a 'better deal'. People forget high minded politics when it impinges on livelihoods.

They'd hurt us pretty badly too, no?

You are right; both sides would be talking about a better deal almost immediately after we had a hard brexit.
