BMF - thanks for the suggestions. I did wonder about a small picture of a flower fairy maybe stuck to the jar so she can be seen from the outside without covering up whats inside. Hadn't thought of flower petals........nice one

    Butterscotch Candy

    INGREDIENTS
    • 110 g brown sugar
    • 55 g butter
    • 100 g white sugar
    • 120 ml water
    • 10 ml vinegar
    • 1 g salt
    • 3 ml vanilla extract
    DIRECTIONS
    1. Generously butter a 10x15 inch baking pan (with sides).
    2. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine brown sugar, butter, white sugar, water, vinegar and salt. Cover and bring to a boil. Remove lid and heat, without stirring, to 270 to 290 degrees F (132 to 143 degrees C), or until a small amount of syrup dropped into cold water forms hard but pliable threads. Pour in vanilla, but do not stir. Remove from heat and pour into prepared pan. Let cool slightly before cutting into squares and allowing candy to cool completely.

  • Wow!! Such a lot of great ideas....just been given some Douwe Egbert jars from a fellow freecycler after requesting some (I don't drink coffee!).....and I've already got plans for a few of them.....

Has anyone done any foodie ones which *don't* involve the recipient to cook anything?? I've got a friend who eats a lot of 'raw' food but I don't have a clue what to so for them?!?!? Would welcome any suggestions...I've got a feeling anything to sugary would be out as well. :o

I'm going to be making a big jar of questions/facts based around the series of CSI, as hubby is a huge fan...will post a picture when I'm done, hopefully will be finished by next week ;)

I don't know what the 'raw' foods are. But, I am making some jars - I did one the muffin mix, looked good last time I looked at it! I am also making some jars with biscuits I made myself (almond and cranberry biscotti, fruit biscotti - for those who don't like nuts, amaretti, and tonight I am planning to make baci di dama buiscuits).

Just googled the raw foods - seems biscuits are out, as they are actually baked... What about making a 'fruit salad'? You can either layer different berries/fruit in the jar, but they would have to be eaten very soon. Not for Christmas, but for a few of my friends, on their birthdays, I made a fruit bowl - get a big bowl and fill it with different varieties of fruit/nut/etc. I did this for the 27th birthday once - not as difficult as you would imagine! (check your tesco - you might be surprised, and include the nuts, there are so many different varieties!). Well, the most difficult part is to get bowl big enough!

Just thought - layering cranberries and blueberries would look really good!

Just had a thought for another jar (for next year!) a word a day jar. You give them a strip, like the journal jar with the word on it, how to pronouce it, and its meaning the person then has to try and use that word during the day! Lots of websites if you google word a day.

That's a brilliant idea! I remember reading an interview in a magazine years ago about someone famous (can't remember who now!) but they said they carried a dictionary in their handbag and read about a new word every day.
