I want to make some of those jars, but - where do you get the jars from? You can probably save them up over the year, but it is November already, and all I could do is small jam jars - not really any use for these recipes.

I know you can buy jars, especially kilner ones - where is the best place? Don't want the jar to be the most expensive part of the gift!

I tend to buy jars from Ikea as I think their prices are ok and the range of sizes and styles is pretty good. You can get clear plastic ones with green lids from Julian Graves...

rusty I used the 1 litre kilner jar (87p from Tesco) when i tried my recipe. It was a bit too big for the recipe I used so next time I will either double the quatities or put some marshmallows on the top as they take up quite a bit of room.
Sorry not much help as mine didn't work first time:rotfl:

Today I've made 3 journal jars. The jars are to give to friends for Xmas. They all look like this...

    IMGP2500.jpg

    and wrapped...

    IMGP2502.jpg

Cost: jars from Ikea 99p each; stripey A5 notebooks £1 each Wilkos, fibres attached to jar lid £1.50ish from ebay (got loads left over so will use for other things), journal questions and tags made myself (printed from Word).

Also made 15 'Mum's Christmas Survial Kits'...

    IMGP2503.jpg

    The bags contain:
List of all items in the bag and why they're there; a bauble (to make Xmas sparkle); party popper (to make sure things go with a bang); mini cracker (hope you have a cracking Xmas); a starburst sweet (for a burst of energy); a penny (so Xmas won't leave you penniless); a rubber band (to stay flexible during the festive season); a teabag (so you can take a break and stay calm). I'm going for a meal out with some other mums before Xmas and these are just a little table gift from me for everyone on the night.

Also made some double chocolate rocky road - YUM YUM YUM ;) - for fireworks tomorrow night. I reckon this recipe could form a jar mix (have to give bars of choc separately) or could be made to give as pressies. Maybe substituting cherries and/or raisins for cranberries? It takes minutes to make and is LOVELY!!! The recipe comes from a Sainsbury's magazine:

    Makes 16 pieces/squares

    4 tbsp butter or marg
    3tbsp golden syrup
400g chocolate (can use all milk or half milk/half dark) I used Ikea bars for 45p a bar
150g chocolate chip cookies broken into small pieces (Tesco have Maryland cookies half price at mo)
a handful of mini marshmallows (had these left over from snowman soup)
    4 tbsp raisins
    10 glace cherries chopped

Basically all you do is melt the butter/marg and sryup together; melt the chocolate seperately (I did this in the microwave) then combine all ingredients together and put in an 18cm square tin lined with clingfilm, level the top as best you can. When mixture is cool, chill for at least 3 hours and cut into 16 pieces. Eat :T

Rainmac your journals in a jar are fantastic! Something I would love to recieve! you have a knack to making everything you do so beautiful! Well done.

Thankyou to all those who helped with my daft question. I will give it a try and providing it isn't a complete disaster I will post pics when I get round to doing it :)

My first Jar & journal went for a 40th b'day last weekend & by all reports, was favourably recieved. It ened up being a tad rushed cuz of my being away from home longer than anticipated, but still turned out ok I think.
I had bought a stripey book & matching spotty pen from Wilko earlier & used the various colours on them when I printed out the questions for the jar. Here's a bit of the list:-

Do you remember when you stopped believing in Father Christmas?

What's your favourite song? When was the last time you heard it?

What sayings do you always remember from being a child & which do you use now?

Are there any old remedies you used to have which you still remember?

That's strange! They're all supposed to be the same sized font so I wonder if it's the colours that make some bigger  ..anyhoo! Did them bigger & with bigger gaps in between, but have to say was very tempted to invest in a guillotine when it came to slicing them all up :p

Had an idea for a jar for OH for xmas - 365 Things I Love About You.

Thought it would be nice that he could have one for every day for a year but I got stuck after about number 15, now I'm starting to question our relationship :rotfl:

Well I've only been able to do 12 of anything so far - so 15 is 3 better than me... Perhaps you could give him 15 blanks for him to fill in what he likes about you! Then put in some hints and tips to put the romance and passion back into the relationship - perhaps aim for 52 items in total - 1 for each week - or add items to fill in the gaps.... I'll leave those to your imagination :rotfl:
