threelittlepigs - got this this morning from fam.history colleague

    http://www.statistics.gov.uk/CCI/nscl.asp?ID=5863

She also told me this :

Somewhere I have my mums old Christmas Cake price list she wrote down around that time - so will hunt it out asap. - I do know the price of a Cadbury's bar of milk chocolate out of the machine was one penny and I could buy a half an ounce of fresh yeast for a half penny, no sweets so I bought this instead.

Did grannies shopping on Saturday mornings the bus fare cost 2 pence half penny to go approx five miles, it would be a return ticket around l944.

    Hope this helps :j

Just found these two that might be of interest.........not 1948 but still interesting to see the prices on the ww2peoples war site

    Hello

Firstly here is just a quick find I made - SOCK JAR

    Thought that looked quite cool.

Ideas for a 1 year old ( this is what I was originally looking for when I found the above link)
    Socks in a jar CLICK

Thought they looked quite cute! Or you could do a variation and maybe have gloves and scarf set - something like that.

Like the idea of the sock jar alison -I've a pair of socks that were bought me as a joke, bright colours and decorated with buttons -even teenage grandaughter wasn't impressed..........be perfect for something like a sock jar though (she says hopefully)

Thanks for the labels link chris - I'm after kitchen jar labels for my 'safe keeping' jars.

‘do you have to add eggs to peppermint creams?xx’
    You can use this method
    1lb icing sugar
    4 tablespoons condensed milk
a few drops oil of peppermint

Sieve icing sugar and mix with condensed milk to form a paste.
Work in a few drops of oil of peppermint
Roll out and cut into shape
Put on a tray and leave in a cool place until set.
(I usually put mine in the fridge)

    Morning, everyone!

I just dashed into a small branch of Tesco to get some milk on my way in to work, and I saw (and bought!) a pack of four (really good sized) value beer glasses which they were selling for 99p. They are straight-sided pint sized glasses which look a bit like this :

    http://thegrandview.files.wordpress.com/2008/02/243px-pint_glass_mixingsvg.png

I have a few teenagers to buy token gifts for at Christmas and had planned to make retro candy boxes for them, but I think these glasses would look really good filled with lollipops etc and wrapped in cellophane. At 25p each, they're cheap containers!

I suppose if I had the time, I could use glass paints to personalise each one too. (Time? what's that??) :)
  • Morning all some lovely ideas and comments as always :D I would be lost without this site!
