rainmac - thanks. Thats a good one. I trawled through my history stuff but its mainly a lot earlier than 1948 apart from house prices.
Thought there might be more on the 'make do and mend' sites but could find all sorts of stuff like how much people were allowed on ration but no prices of stuff. I've put a request up on one of the family history sites to see if anyone else knows any more...........I'm intrigued myself now................lol:o

  • I've been reading this thread with interest & it's given me a few ideas, but the link to the glass painted jars reminded me of something I saw in Lincoln a few years ago.

Basically it was wine or champagne bottles (still full!) which had been decorated with glass paints to make more personal. For example, a champagne bottle had written on it "Happy 21st" in the gold paint/outliner (sorry can't remember it's name) you use before filling with glass paint. There were ones for all sorts of special occasions, I decided against having a go myself as I've not got a steady enough hand & the curves on a wine bottle are quite tight. Was tempted to try some holly leaves & Merry Christmas on a few bottles but chickened out!

That does look lovely but please remember that supermarkets eg Asda and Tesco also have a good range of sweets from when we were kids etc at much cheaper prices and no packing charges than a lot of these websites

  • I picked up a glass biscuit barrel for £1 in Tescos yesterday I'm hoping will be big enough for 365 jokes (I may have to fold them small) but I've looked through this thread & found the link to jokes on craftysayings.com, but there's not enough & are a bit too American for the person I'll be giving it to.

I'm sure I'd seen a link to more jokes but I can't find it any more, can anyone point me in the right direction?

Mary, If I was given a jar containing a mix of sweets and quotes I'm afraid my fingers would find most of the sweets before the quotes! Am I being too nasty in suggesting that you wrap some of the quotes in used sweet papers so they look like sweets?

barbeka - OH suggested wrapping them up like that but there's quite a lot of quotes and I only sat and folded them all up last night...............lol Think I'll just make them small sweets and not quote so easy to grab..............lol

Just had a quick look at one of the family history sites where I asked about this and have come up with these links..........haven't had a look so don't know if they help at all but worth a go. I think the first one (bit hard to read) if you scroll down, there's something about prices.........think that was what she said........
