Provider: Mint
Amount Reclaimed: £185
Amount they paid: £172.10
The story:
I closed the credit card account a year ago but wondered if I could claim charges back. I phoned the customer services dept and just asked for a list of charges to be sent to me. A week later the statement arrived (no charge).
I asked for all the charges (£160) plus compound interest of 8%.
The offered me £64 (the difference between each £20 charge and the recommended £12 charge) a week later. I phoned them and asked for 8% compound interest on top of that. They refused and offered me 8% flat interest. I declined and sighed that I'd need to take it to the courts. The agent said "wait, I'll speak to my manager" and 2 minutes later he came back and said they would offer the full charges plus 8% flat interest....RESULT...
Recieved a cheque today:T
I'm now going after RBS and EGG.
DO NOT ACCEPT FIRST OFFER x
Thanks a million to Martin x0 -
Provider: Abbey
Amount Reclaimed: £44.19
Amount they paid: £44.19
The story: Took out credit card to use for just the 6 months interest free period. DID NOT set up direct debit (sorry Martin, your advice is soooo right) so got charged for late payment followed by interest on original £12 fine. Asked for refund, closed account, cut up card and sent it back to them. Usual guff about in their terms and conditions so wrote asking a human to look at account and not computer which doesn't know I am a loyal customer of over 40 years - does that mean nothing these days. Stated my next letter was going to the Financial Ombudsman. Fell over themselves to apologise and appease me and fully refunded amount. Have since closed current account and ISA with Abbey as a personal protest against their treatment of a long standing customer. It's well worth keeping on at the bank even for such a small amount. [Thanks for your webpage]0 -
Provider : Royal Bank of Scotland CC
Claimed: £228.00 + £21.08 interest
Refunded £259.50
Sent my first letter using the template and enclosed a cheque for £10 on the 15.01.09. RBS replied on the 23.01.09 and enclosed a list of all charges (for both overlimit and late payments) . They also returned my cheque stating that they did not charge for this service.
I sent my second letter on the 25.01.09 (using the template) requesting all fees are refunded plus interest. Included a print out from the interest calculator on this site.
1st refusal letter received from them on the 28.01.09 stating that charges are fair etc.
Third letter sent 01.02.09 again using the template and giving them 14 days to respond.
Letter received from RBS on the 06.02.09 offering full settlement of £259.50.
10.02.09 letter sent to accept their offer.
Also just to note all the charges I have had refunded are the £12 so called 'fair' charges.
Now i'll be going after Sainsburys Visa, Halifax and Vanquish- will keep you updated:j0 -

Hi
Started the reclaiming process 14th January 2009.
Provider: Barclaycard
Asked for £240 back and on Friday had £240 credited to account plus £20 charges. Cannot believe how quick and easy it was, no refusal no arguing just the money re-credited!! Currently waiting for Capital One statements to come through and will then be putting another claim in.
Thank you MSE

Tesco Credit Card
Claimed £378
Paid £408
Surprisingly easy, sent template letter just after Xmas, Tesco said charges were fair and offered refund of difference of one £20 charge and the new £12 charge, so grand total of £8!
Wrote back and asked for full £378 and they offered £8.40!!! so wrote back and again stated that I wanted the full amount, and today had letter offereing £408, which I suppose is the amount I asked for + interest. Thanks to everyone on here, couldn't have done it without you all xxx0 -
Provider: Monument
Amount Reclaimed: 864 +148 interest
Amount they paid: 864
The story:
Sent first request for statements 16th Dec, had statements within 3 weeks.
Sent letter asking for refund in full of 1012 inc interest. Received letter back from them stating would pay me half the fees (£432). Sent another letter back saying i am claiming the full amount but would accept £938 (charges plus 1/2 interest) if within 14 days.
No reply so called them and they said they sent a letter confirming they would pay me the £864. I accepted this as happy with that.
Funds will be refunded to my account directly which is fine.
Just want to say a massive thank you to Martin for this knowledge.
One of the easiest ways of getting your money back and a great way to take on the companies for a change.
thank you Martin, and all on this site for their advice and tips.0 -
