Some I get from friends and family and others I've picked up at a local cake decorating stall in the market. They have a basket of recycled jam/pickle/coffee jars and you can take as many as you like for a donation to a charity.
  • Poundland have 2 kilner type jars for £1.
Mine were water tight, so I'd happily use for jam etc. Dimensions approx 10cm dia, 12cm high. Mine easily took 750ml with a bit of space left, so possibly 800ml max.
    Not free, but very cheap!

    It's only a game

  • Always reuse jars. TBH I shudder at the thought of buying a jar just for use! Coffee type jars and anything plastic lidded are used ( with the paper bit removed from the lid) for chutneys and pickles.
    Put the kettle on. ;)

I started myself off by buying some from Lakeland but now word has spread in work that if people save their jars I will trade them for some homemade jam or chutney so it works quite well that I have a regular supply :)
  • My mother used to make loads of jam, mincemeat etc. and gave most of it away. She was having trouble getting enough jars, so I printed her some labels on the computer:

    "Kath's Mincemeat 2006 (or whatever)
    Please return jar for refilling"

Worked a treat. She not only got her jars back, she got some extras as well.
If we are supposed to be thin, why does chocolate exist?
  • As this has fallen from the front page of OS, I'll add it to the existing thread :D

But coffee jars are no good for preserves, you need to type with the button.

I've used coffee jars for chutneys and peanut butter jars with a plastic lid for marmalade with no problems.

Don't forget that jams were/are often covered with just a layer of waxed paper and a circle of fabric or brown paper.

Right I not got nearly enough jars for jams and chutneyts as doing food hampers for xmas.

Looked into buying but madly pricey.

Now a few people on here suggested buying value but I could
never throw away the contents would ahve to do something with it.

If i decant jam from jar into tub is it ok to freeze as thinking jam sponge, jam tart, jam roly poly have I forgetton anything else I could do with jam.

    Looked at basics prices

lemon curd the cheapest at 22p but have no idea what to do with it never tried stuff myself.

marmalade 27p a jar- all I can think of is maybe on a pork/ham joint.

    Mixed fruit 33p

    strawberry 38p.

what should i buy tonnes of lemon curd
    all stawberry
or maybe a mixture as might find some uses for all over time if could freeze it.

Its still much cheaper than buying as 100jars of lemon curd 22quid compared to 90 in lakeland.

Im asking relatives/freinds to save jars
im saving some but dont buy many these days as make stuff myself.
